Rams making history to start 2015
It’s been quite a stretch for Spring-Ford the past two weeks of the season.
Ricky Venuto tied the school record for most passing touchdowns in a game as he tossed four in the Rams’ opening-win against State College, joining Trevor Sasek, Hank Coyne, and Brandon Leacraft as the only quarterbacks to do so.
In the Rams’ 58-7 victory over Phoenixville, Dan Kelchner tied a single-game record for most tackles for a loss with four. Kelchner joins Robby Varner (who did it twice) and Jake Leahy as the only players to do so. Even further, the 14 tackles for a loss was an all-time single game Spring-Ford record.
Spring-Ford, which climbed to an Honorable Mention position in the PA Football News rankings, hosts Upper Perkiomen Friday at 7 p.m.
Historic Night
Meadeville’s (District 10) Journey Brown rushed for 720 yards and ten touchdowns in a historic 107-90 victory over DuBois High School Friday night. The running back amassed 341 yards and five touchdowns in one half and came close to shattering the record of 754 yards, set by John Giannantonio of Netcong, New Jersey, in 1950. To put that in perspective, the Mercury All-Area leading rusher in Pottsgrove’s Tyrell Barr, has 392 rushing yards and five touchdowns in two games. Pottstown’s Bryant Wise, No. 2 on the rushing list, has 231 rushing yards.
In the loss, DuBois quarterback Matt Miller, a sophomore making his first start, finished with 741 passing yards, a Pennsylvania record for passing yards in a game, and 10 touchdowns.
The national record for passing yards is 764, set by David Koral of Pacific Palisades, California, in 2000.
Goose Eggs
Daniel Boone has gotten off to a hot start this season, shutting out both opponents (7-0 vs. Cocalico; 28-0 vs. Octorara) in the Blazers’ two victories. It’s an impressive streak for the Blazers as the team had only registered two shutouts since 2010.
Dual Threat
Boyertown’s Sarafina Valenti has made her presence felt on the pitch and on the gridiron. Valenti was a key player in goal in the Bears’ victory over Perkiomen Valley Friday afternoon before putting on the pads and going 5-for-6 on PAT attempts in the football team’s victory over Upper Perkiomen in the nightcap. Valenti is No. 3 in The Mercury area in points.
Pottstown Resurgence
Pottstown won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2003. Bryant Wise and Brandon Tinson have been a two-headed monster in the backfield for the Trojans with both ranking No. 2 and No. 3, respectively in rushing totals. Wise has ran for 231 yards and two scores with Tinson rushing for 187.
Player of the Week
Tyrell Barr, Pottsgrove
Barr rushed for 324 yards and four touchdowns as the Falcons overcame a sluggish first half to run away with a 44-20 victory over Pope John Paul II
Coach of the Week
Bill Parks, Daniel Boone
Parks guided the Blazers to another shutout victory, topping Octorara 28-0. It’s the first time the Blazers have started the season 2-0 since 2011 where they fell to Wilson in the District 3-AAAA quarterfinals.
Game of the Week
Perkiomen Valley at Pottsgrove, 7 p.m.
In a rematch of last year’s do-or-die clash for a share of the PAC-10 title, Perkiomen Valley visits Pottsgrove Friday night. Perkiomen Valley is led by quarterback Stephen Sturm, who has tossed eight touchdowns in the Vikings’ two victories this season. Pottsgrove is trying to get healthy, starting its game against Pope John Paul II without the majority of its secondary. Tyrell Barr is coming off a game in which he rushed for 324 yards and four touchdowns.
