Pottstown’s Grinstead to resign after 2015 season

Pottstown head coach Don Grinstead will resign at the end of the 2015 season, accepting a district sports director job for the YMCA that will relocate him to Florida.

“Nothing changes for the rest of the season,” Grinstead said. “I’m the head coach for the 2015 season and I won’t be leaving to take that position until the moment of that last snap and the clock striking zero in the last game, whenever that is, either in districts or on Thanksgiving,

“But as of right now, we concentrate on winning the day. Our kids are out here right now winning the day and they’ve taken to it well.”

Grinstead, who currently serves as the Sports League Director at the Spring Valley YMCA, is in his third year at the helm of the Trojans.

After compiling a 3-20 overall record in his first two seasons, the Trojans (6-1) are off to their best start since their PAC-10 championship season in 2002 and are ranked No. 3 in the latest District 1-AAA Power Rankings.

The Trojans have three games remaining in their regular season schedule including a trip to Spring-Ford on Saturday at 2 p.m. before taking on Methacton and Pottsgrove in subsequent weeks. Currently, two Trojans (Brandon Tinson and Bryant Wise) are ranked fifth or higher in the area in rushing yards as the team averages 23.3 points per game, a far cry from the 9.4 it averaged in 2014.

An Eastern Kentucky graduate, Grinstead spent four years there as a video technician after graduation before serving a one-year stint as the defensive coordinator for the semi-pro Dayton Drive. He was then the defensive line coach at Great Valley in 2009, and served as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the next three seasons before coming to Pottstown.
