Plymouth Whitemarsh splashes to easy win over Wissahickon

LOWER GWYNEDD >> In conditions which would have pleased Donald, Daffy or even a Peking Duck, Plymouth Whitemarsh slogged, sloshed and splashed its way past host Wissahickon, 50-18, in a Suburban One League American Conference contest Friday night.

Nafeese Nasir ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns as the Colonials won their fifth straight to open the season.

“Hey, it was fun,” said satisfied PW head coach Dan Chang, his face almost completely obscured by a poncho. “We made a couple of mistakes early on, and they did some things we weren’t expecting.

“But after we made some adjustments, we got back to doing what we do well.”

The early going reflected the conditions with the Colonials losing a fumble at the Trojans 14-yard line.

But after forcing a second straight Wissahickon three-and-out, the Colonials went 60 yards on 11 plays with Nasir tossing a 10-yard scoring pass to Vince Martina with 1:01 left in the first quarter.

Wissahickon drove as far as the Colonials 34-yard line on its next drive, but back-to-back penalties ultimately forced a punt.

Buoyed by a 21-yard run by Nasir, the Colonials then went 80 yards on eight running plays, the final one a Jake Winterbottom 3-yard run to put the visitors on top, 14-0, with 4:42 left in the half.

Things went further downhill for the Trojans, who lost a fumble deep in their own territory on the ensuing kickoff.

The Colonials punched it in three plays later, with Nasir going six yards to up the PW lead to 20-0 with 3:50 left in the second quarter.

Undaunted, Wissahickon went 60 yards on eight plays, with quarterback Mike Marino’s 12-yard strike to Bryan Haire pulling the home team to within 20-6 at the break.

But the second half belonged to the Colonials.

After losing a fumble on their first possession of the third quarter, the Colonials scored on their next four possessions.

First, the visitors went 80 yards on seven plays with back-up quarterback Joe Stoberl sweeping left end to put the visitors on top, 28-6.

Moments later, after the Colonials defense covered a Trojans fumble deep in Wissahickon territory, Blaise Gravinese scored from the 6-yard line to make the score 36-6, and the rout was on.

“They’re a real good football team,” said Trojans acting head coach Mike Borkowski. “Defensively, we were trying to give them a different look, but they adjusted so well.

“Offensively, we wanted to spread the field and control the line of scrimmage. But they’re just so well-coached, and we weren’t able to do that.”

As the coup de grace, the Colonials went 74 yards on five plays to kick in the running clock.

Nasir got it going with a 23-yard jaunt to midfield, then polished off the 23-point quarter with a 45-yard touchdown scamper, pushing the score to 43-6 with 1:33 left in the third quarter.

Wissahickon showed its spirit, scoring twice in the fourth quarter on runs by Marino and Sam Kane.

But a short time later the Colonials were cold and wet, and in the win column again.
