Kapp breaks record as Boyertown tops Owen J. Roberts, 45-20

NEW HANOVER >> Pride.

It’s the reason players take the field. The reason they spend time in the weight room. The reason they put on the jersey each week.

And their pride is what sent the Bears past Owen J. Roberts, 45-20 on Friday night at Boyertown’s Bear Memorial Stadium, their final game of the season.

“I couldn’t think of a better way for us to end our season,” said Boyertown head coach George Parkinson. “We’re at home, it’s Senior Night. It doesn’t get any better. I know these guys wanted to end the season with a win, so I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The win caps the Bears’ season at 5-4 in the PAC-10 (5-5 overall) while OJR drops to 4-4 PAC-10 (4-6 overall).

It also serves as Jerry Kapp’s finish to an unforgettable season for the Bears.

The sophomore receiver broke a school-record, hauling in three catches for 96 yards on the night to bring his season total to 645 yards on the season. The previous mark had been held by Nick Brough (‘13), who hauled in 603 yards on the year.

“I’ve got to give all the props to Lawrence (Garnett) and the offensive line,” said Kapp. “Without them, there’s no way I’d I would have been able to do this. Everyone has been pushing me the whole year to keep getting better, keep playing hard.”

Kapp’s record-breaking reception couldn’t have come in a better way.

On second down and 13 with under a minute to play in the first half, Garnett rolled out of the pocket and kept his eyes on his favorite target. Knowing he could trust his receiver despite double-coverage, Garnett threw it up for Kapp, who hauled it in for a 50 yard score to go up 21-7.

“Once the ball was in the air, I knew I had to go up and get it,” said Kapp. “Closing out the first half, we knew we needed to get some more points on the board.”

Although it looked like a toss up, Garnett knew fully he could count on his flanker.

“He’s always been the guy I can trust the most when the pocket is starting to collapse,” said Garnett. “I’m proud of him. The way he plays, I think he’s going to break a lot more records here.”

Garnett threw for 196 yards completing 10 of passing 14 attempts with three touchdowns.

Kapp was on the receiving end of two scores, while Keith Brough hauled in two passes for 60 yards and a score.

Garnett also carried it for 96 yards on 20 attempts including a 5-yard run to break the scoreless tie in the second quarter. Running back Hunter Vogels carried it for 111 yards including a 51-yard touchdown. Dan Heller took it eight times for 38 yards and a touchdown.

“The guys did everything we’ve been asking of them all season,” said Parkinson. “This was probably the best game we’ve played. It’s the best way we could have ended the year.”

Boyertown put up 458 total yards on offense while holding the Wildcats’ offense to 234 yards.

Quarterback Dawson Stuart completed 12 of his 29 passing attempts for 111 yards and two touchdowns but also threw two interceptions.

Wide out Hunter Hinrichs caught seven passes for 51 yards and a score while CJ Weaver had two catches for 26 yards and a touchdown.

Rayquan Stewart highlighted the Wildcat ground attack, racking up 72 yards on 11 carries while Adam Pinelli toted it 12 times for 49 yards and a score.

After holding the Bears scoreless through the first quarter, OJR gave up two quick touchdowns in a matter of just over two minutes during the second quarter.

“We’ve been struggling all season with making in-game adjustments,” said first year Owen J. Roberts head coach Rich Kolka, “but we’re still young. We’ve put in a lot of hard work this season, so we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

The Wildcats’ season doesn’t come to an end just yet. They’ll play Hatboro-Horsham in a non-league contest next Friday then travel to Pottstown for the annual Thanksgiving day game.

“We’re hoping we can finish the season right,” said Kolka. “We’ve done a lot of good things this season, and we’ve got two more games to show it.”

NOTES >> Vogels and Evan Giannetti each came up with an interception for Boyertown.
