Inaugural Bucks-Montco Lions All-Star Football Classic Friday at William Tennent

After a two-year respite, the graduated seniors of area Montgomery County football teams are playing an All-Star game Friday night.

But instead of beating on each other, the Montgomery County players have a different target — the All-Stars of the Bucks County area.

The Montgomery County All-Stars and the Bucks County All-Stars will square off at William Tennent High School (7:30 p.m.) in a contest both sides hope will continue for the foreseeable future.

The Bucks County squad, which will be helmed by Central Bucks East head coach John Donnelly, will feature the talents of quarterbacks Mike Alley of Pennsbury and Tom Garlick of Quakertown, while running backs Rob Burns (Quakertown), Richmond-bound Maurice Jackson (Truman), Kyle Smith (Neshaminy) and wideouts Kyle Hickey (Council Rock South) and Ethan Silverman (Central Bucks East) will be among the skill players on display.

The Montgomery County squad will be led by former Abington head coach Tim Sorber and its offense will be paced by 2,000-yard running back Nafeese Nasir of Plymouth Whitemarsh and Nyfease West of North Penn, while quarterbacks Braden Mack (Cheltenham) and Casey Walsh (Hatboro-Horsham) will handle the offense and the likes of Dan Boggs (Upper Dublin), Justin Ostopowicz (North Penn) and Mike Gilmore (Germantown Academy) will be roaming the secondary in search of forward passes.

The contest has been dedicated to the memory of Roger Grove, the former Norristown High head football coach, who also coached as an assistant at Neshaminy and who passed away recently.

As for the game itself, it is expected to be a wide-open affair, and also an experiment, of sorts, for future endeavors between the two counties’ programs.

As for players to watch, much of the focus will be on the likes of the aforementioned Mack and Upper Moreland lineman Ryan Cavanaugh, both headed to Temple, while Plymouth Whitemarsh tight end Luke Mascio is ticketed for Franklin & Marshall.

Among the Bucks County All-Stars, Bucks wideout Kyle Hickey (Council Rock South) is Penn State-bound, while Council Rock North defensive lineman Thomas Hewitt will play at Holy Cross and Pennsbury defensive back Greg Lichtenstein, Central Bucks South offensive lineman Dan Marks and the aforementioned Silverman will be attending Temple.

The Montgomery County All-Star football game, a staple for 46 seasons, was last played in 2013 but was discontinued due to the lack of sponsorship.
