Governor Mifflin shuts out Daniel Boone

Unable to put a stop to Governor Mifflin’s veer-option rushing attack, Daniel Boone suffered a 48-0 loss to the Mustangs on Friday night at Brazinsky Stadium.

Mifflin piled up 325 yards on the ground while limiting Daniel Boone to negative rushing yards on the night.

“Our offense is all based on making the right read,” said Mifflin quarterback Hunter Reeser. “We practiced really hard this week and spent a lot of time figuring out where the read will be and what will work in certain situations. It played out really well.”

“Our guys were doing a good job of making the right reads and finding the open holes,” said fullback Lucas Garner. “The linemen created some big holes and gave us an opportunity to make the big plays out of the backfield.”

Garner’s big play came on the Mustangs’ fifth offensive play of the game, as he rushed for a 45-yard touchdown run while piling up 96 yards and two scores on 11 carries. Reeser carried it eight times for 54 yards and two scores.

As a result of their balanced rushing attack, Governor Mifflin improves to 3-0 in the Berks Football Conference (4-3 overall). The loss sends Daniel Boone (0-3 Berks, 3-4 overall) to its third-straight loss after starting out the season 3-0.

Scoring on seven of its eight drives on the game, the Mustangs were out to a 41-0 lead before the horn sounded for halftime.

Wide out Shavan Prince took it on an end-around twice totaling 41 yards which included a 10-yard touchdown. Second-string quarterback Austin Baker racked up 36 yards on four carries including a nine-yard touchdown run. He also threw a 10-yard score to Dehvon Smith.

“It was good to see us move the ball well,” said Governor Mifflin head coach Dominic Vecchio. “We’d been making a lot of fundamental mistakes the past couple of weeks. It was good to see everyone come together in this game. We did a good job of limiting our mistakes and moving the chains.”

The Mustangs finished with 21 first downs while the Blazers could only muster four.

Plagued by injuries to key players, Daniel Boone was limited to just 57 total yards of offense including two trips across midfield on the game. The offense piled up -16 rushing yards with sophomore quarterback Josh Ehst being sacked three times.

Filling in for injured quarterback Nick Hughes, Ehst made his first career start under center. On the night, he completed 11 of his 14 attempts for 73 yards.

“It was definitely a learning experience for him out there,” said Daniel Boone head coach Bill Parks. “Still, he held his own and hung in tough. There’s definitely a lot he can take away from this one.”

Wide out Ryan Okuniewski hauled in four receptions for 27 yards including a 24-yard jump-ball as the clock expired.

“Our guys fought down to the finish,” added Parks. “These guys are learning a lot about adversity and constantly trying to get better. I keep telling the guys, we’ve just got to stick together and fight it out.”

Along with Hughes sidelined with injury, running back Cinque Ramsey has been sidelined since Week 3. In his place, the Blazers could hardly get the run-game started.

With Muhlenberg and Exeter looming on the horizon, the Mustangs’ celebration will have to be short-lived.

“We’ve got two really tough games coming up, so we’ve still got plenty of work to go,” said Vecchio. “We got ourselves down in a hole early on (this season), so every game from this point out is a must-win. We need to keep playing with that mentality.”

The Blazers will celebrate their Senior Night next week when they host Pottsville.
