Gonna Fly Now: Pottsgrove breaks out aerial attack in 34-8 win over Boyertown
BOYERTOWN >> It’s not often that the ball leaves the hands of Jay Sisko in any form other than a handoff.
Yet on Friday night when Pottsgrove’s senior quarterback let it fly, good things happened.
Sisko completed both of his passing attempts for big gains to Jimai Springfield, opening up the running lanes as Pottsgrove put together a dominant 34-8 win over Boyertown in a cross-divisional Pioneer Athletic Conference matchup.
Sisko connected with Springfield for a 40-yard gainer late in the second quarter, which set up the QB’s 2-yard keeper for the score to give Pottsgrove a 13-0 lead. The pair then connected deep strike in the third quarter, one where Springfield pulled it in and turned on the jets to pick up a 59-yard receiving touchdown, his first of the season, to make it 20-0.
“Jay’s a special kid. He does a lot of the unnoticed things for us,” said Pottsgrove’s first-year head coach Bill Hawthorne of his quarterback. “He’s making reads every play and he does everything we ask of him. If we had a throwing system, he’d be a great quarterback.”
It’s pretty simple to put together a scouting report on Pottsgrove’s offense: They like to run the ball. A whole heck of a lot.
Entering Week 3, Sisko had just one completion on seven attempts so far this season behind Pottsgrove’s run-heavy attack.
The Falcons’ running backs did their part as well, rushing it for a combined 315 yards on the night. Isaiah Taylor racked up 127 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries while running mate Isaiah Glover had 89 yards and a score on 10 carries. Sisko racked up 90 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns on 12 rushes.
Defensively, Pottsgrove had Boyertown’s number for most of the night.
The Falcons held the Bears to 145 yards rushing and made it a nightmarish game for quarterback Ayden Mathias.
Mathias was sacked three times and rushed for just six yards on 15 carries. Standout running back Jamie Moccia was limited to just 95 yards with a touchdown in the third quarter.
Although disappointed in the result, Boyertown head coach TJ Miller knows there is plenty of football left.
“That’s the way it is in life, things aren’t always gonna go your way,” he said. “When things don’t go your way, you’ve got to wake up the next morning, start the tractor and go back to work. That’s what we’re gonna do.”
No Average Bear >> Prior to kickoff of Friday night’s game, Nathanael Davenport served as an honorary team captain for Boyertown. Davenport, a second grade student at Earl Elementary School, is a cancer survivor. He and his mother, Christen, visited the team’s practice earlier this week where he shared his story and got to run some drills with the players.
