Football: Despite Bonner-Prendie’s delay, Isaiah Sessions gets Friars off to fast start
By Christiaan DeFranco
LOWER GWYNEDD — Isaiah Sessions offered Bonner & Prendergast fans a sigh of relief on the opening kick from Lansdale Catholic Friday, returning it 72 yards for a touchdown.
“That was huge,” Bonner & Prendie coach Jack Muldoon said. “Isaiah made a great play. It allowed everybody to settle in, because we knew LC would come out fired up.”
The game, held at Wissahickon High School, started 40 minutes late because B-P’s buses were late making the trip from Upper Darby. That courtesy of road closures and traffic due to President Joe Biden’s visit and a police incident at the airport.
“Our bus driver took an hour and a half to get to us, to pick us up, because he was coming up that way,” Muldoon said. “It normally would have taken about 20 minutes.”
Following Sessions’ start, freshman quarterback Kenjai Gatling went on to complete 14 of 20 passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Friars over LC 28-7.
Junior Jalil Hall had six receptions for 53 yards and a score, and Jerimiah Coleman caught five balls for 41 yards and a TD for the Friars (5-2, 4-1 PCL).
Bonner & Prendie’s Mick Johnson rushed for 84 yards and caught a touchdown pass and Avery Hanley rushed for 83 yards as the Friars built a 21-7 halftime lead and cruised from there.
Jacahi Streeter burst free for a 34-yard touchdown for Lansdale Catholic (4-4, 2-3), which tied the game early in the opening period. He ran the ball 10 times for 108 yards, but the Crusaders couldn’t muster much other offense.
“We’re not at that stage where we can dig out of a hole,” LC coach Dominic D’Addona said. “We’re not that caliber a team right now, and the penalties didn’t help.”
LC racked up 11 penalties for 58 yards, and Bonner drew eight flags for 100 yards.
The Crusaders had 11 first downs the whole night, while B-P amassed 18 first downs and 371 yards of total offense.
“This was one of our better nights throwing the ball, and we usually can run the ball pretty well,” Muldoon said.
