Delco Football Friday: Rain halves Friday’s District 1 slate
Five Delco teams are alive and well in the District 1 playoffs. That number will be trimmed to at least four after this weekend.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, two Class 5A games scheduled for Friday night have been moved to Saturday: Interboro at Penn Wood and Rustin at Academy Park.
The Interboro-Penn Wood contest will kick off at 6 p.m. at Kerr Field. Strath Haven’s George L. King Field will host Rustin-Academy Park at 7.
There are two games Friday night involving Delco teams.
In a District 1 Class 6A quarterfinal:
Quakertown at Garnet Valley >> The 11th-seeded Panthers (9-2) have been a surprise. Because they play a relatively weak schedule and placed third in the Suburban One American Division, few believed they would upset sixth-seeded Perkiomen Valley. But the Quakers dominated time of possession, holding ball for 34 minutes while rushing for 286 yards in a 26-14 victory over the reigning PAC champs. Running back Christian Patrick accrued 196 yards and two touchdowns for Q’town.
The third-seeded Jaguars (11-0) had no trouble disposing of 14th-seeded Pennsbury. In a 49-14 trouncing, the Jags received a solid effort from junior quarterback Ryan Gallagher, who rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown and passed for 18 yards and another score. GV rushed for 466 yards, the fourth time this season it has totaled at least 400 yards on the ground.
In a District 1 Class 5A quarterfinal Friday:
Unionville at Radnor >> For the second straight year, the 11th-seeded Indians (5-6) went into No. 6 Springfield and handed the Cougars a season-ending loss. In a rematch of last year’s district final, Unionville blanked Springfield, 9-0. The defense, led by linebackers Alex Pelegrin and Joe Fariello, limited Springfield to 94 yards of offense. Connor Schilling ran for 102 yards and the only touchdown.
The No. 3 Raiders (9-2) avoided a first-round defeat when Sean Mullarkey connected with Jahmir Rider in the end zone as time expired in regulation, downing No. 14 Marple Newtown, 27-25. It was the first playoff victory in program history.
In the District 1 Class 5A quarterfinals Saturday:
Interboro at Penn Wood >> The ninth-seeded Bucs (6-5) claimed a 33-22 decision over No. 8 Upper Merion. Senior running back Mike Moore (101 yards, two TDs) eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the fourth straight game.
Top-seeded Penn Wood (10-1) routed No. 16 Kennett, 40-6. All-Delco wide receiver Kennedy Poles set the county record for career yardage (2,868), and junior quarterback Desman Johnson threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Penn Wood handled Interboro in the regular season, 50-29.
Rustin vs. Academy Park at Strath Haven >> The fifth-seeded Golden Knights (9-2) blanked Oxford, 28-0, for their fifth straight win. Collin Hurley led the way for the Ches-Mont American champions with 96 yards on the ground and a touchdown. He also had an interception.
Rustin is the only team that solved Penn Wood, a 43-28 victory Sept. 21. The fourth-seeded Academy Park (8-3) lost by 20 points to Penn Wood just two weeks ago. Skylor Fillis became the first Delco quarterback to run for 1,000 yards this season in AP’s 20-19 win over No. 13 Strath Haven. Fillis finished with a season-high 219 yards and two TDs.
