Bishop Shanahan cruises to 2-0 with win over tardy Prep Charter

DOWNINGTOWN >> Prep Charter had a nightmare trip to get to Jack Mancini Stadium on Friday. When the nonleague contest against Bishop Shanahan started, the trip turned out to be the best part of the evening.

The Eagles scored on their first four posessions of the first half and cruised to a 36-0 victory over the Huskies.

Shanahan improves to 2-0 for the third straight season. Prep Charter falls to 0-2, and have been outscored 86-0 in the two outings.

“We had a good win,” said Shanahan coach Paul Meyers. “We knew they were a little down with their troubles getting here, but we told the kids you still have to go out and play. We had to jump on them early.”

The Huskies’ difficulties started when their bus was late to arrive to their Philadelphia school. Combined with a commute in a driving rain storm, they arrived late, with the game starting nearly 20 minutes after its scheduled kickoff.

Prep Charter committed three penalties on its first possession and a 19-yard punt set the Eagles up on the Huskies 25.

It took one play to cash in. Garrett Glendenning hit the hole in the middle, bounced out to the left and scooted in for a 25-yard score for the early 7-0 lead.

“It was a great night,” said Glendenning. The O-line was blocking so well, no one was there. It was easy. I was going to up the middle, then I saw someone coming and I bounced it outside.”

The Eagles recorded a safety the next time Prep Charter had the ball. Punter Anthony Hillanbrand dropped the snap in the end zone and was swarmed ubnder to make it 9-0.

The Eagles took the ensuing free kick and made it 16-0 as Jon Loftus burst through the line to score on a 11-yard jaunt.

The good times kept rolling for the Eagles as Glendenning made it two scores from two touches, going 16 yards for a 22-0 advantage after missing the extra point.

Shanahan closed out the first quarter with another long touchdown run, Kyle Stine sprinted 31 yards for a 29-0 lead.

Matt Coldonato scored from the one in the second to make it 36-0, which enacted the running clock mercy rule for the second half, when Meyers cleared the bench.

The Huskies gained just 47 yards in the first half as the Shanahan defense neutralized the few playmakers they had.

“I think we had to pick up from last game because we let in a couple of easy scores,” said  defensive lineman Lenny Kresefski, who had two sacks. “Trying to keep contain. I felt like we did well on the pass and the run.”

Two wins from two games is bound to give a young team confidence, but the road does get bumpier. The Eagles visit Daniel Boone next week before entering the crucible of Ches-Mont League play when they take on Coatesville.

“We got to step up and get better,” said Meyers.

NOTES >> Shamir Sharpe led the Huskies in rushing with just 12 yards. They managed just 11 yards on the ground as a team and 50 yards in total offense. … Shanahan did not attempt a pass. They ran the ball 34 times for 200 yards. … Prep Charter did move the ball on the Shanahan reserves, advancing to the Eagles’ 11, but a fumble ended the drive.
