Second-half barrage sends Wissahickon past Upper Dublin

AMBLER — Sometimes a big game just can’t live up to the hype.

Monday night’s Suburban One American Conference matchup between Wissahickon and Upper Dublin that was the case as the Trojans used a second half onslaught to defeat the Cardinals 6-0.

As the two teams took the field for Wissahickon’s senior night both teams entered with matching 8-3 records in the American Conference setting up a pseudo elimination game.

“I think the girls were really excited about this game,’ Wissahickon coach Lucy Gil said. “The seniors have been excited about this game for the entire season.’

The Trojans only took a one-goal lead into halftime despite controlling the flow of the game for the majority of the half. Rachael Zimmerman opened the scoring but Zimmerman and Wissahickon were just getting started.

“I said to them (at half) I’m really not comfortable with one goal,’ Gil said.

Wissahickon had the ball on the Upper Dublin side of the 50 for a good majority of the game due part to the Trojans ability to dominate the midfield and get out into transition.

The stingy Wissahickon midfield was controlled by Kara Miles and Ashley Lackowitz among others.

“Many times we were a second too late and a step behind,’ Upper Dublin coach Heather Boyer said. “When you’re playing against a team like Wissahickon with really good sticks, good passing skills and good knowledge of the game, they’re going to beat you.’

It was Lackowitz that got the scoring started in the second half for Wissahickon eight minutes in.

After the scoring hit a lull, the Trojans banged in four goals in the final eight minutes of the game, including three more from Zimmerman, as they capped the great offensive night for the Trojans.

“The girls just played their best. I’ve never seen them play like this,’ Gil said.

Both the Trojans and Cardinals have one game remaining on the season, however for the Cardinals its final regular season game against Springfield will likely end its season while a Wissahickon win in its final contest against Cheltenham will probably put it in the playoff picture.

“I would have liked to have thought our girls would be more excited to play Wissahickon,’ Boyer said. “I don’t know if they just had themselves beat in their heads before they came out here but it’s kind of a letdown.’
