Pope John Paul II traveled to Upper Merion for the final Frontier Division matchup of the season for the two teams. PJP went home with a 3-1 win under the lights on Upper Merion’s Senior Recognition night.
Pope John Paul II (PJP) got off to a quick start, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. In the 4th minute, AJ Williams took a pass from Justin Russel and put it past Upper Merion Goalkeeper Nimrod Espinoza. Five minutes later, Salvy Marano converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0. Upper Merion fought back and with 8 minutes left in the first half, Trevor Looby picked up a ball from Seth Stumpfrock and hammered it past PJP Goalkeeper John Wagner.
The score remained this way deep into the 2nd half. Upper Merion pressured PJP for most of the 2nd half but, was unable to get the ball by John Wagner who had another great game in net, saving 10 of the 11 shots that were on goal tonight. As Upper Merion was pushing up, PJP counter attacked with a nice play from Justin Russell to hold the ball, wait for help and combined passes with AJ Williams. Williams then finished off the passing series by putting a ball through to Salvy Marano, who converted for the 2nd time on the night, with 6:45 remaining on the clock.
