Ketterer scores twice as Unionville cruises past Council Rock North

EAST MARLBOROUGH >> If the Ches-Mont champs from Unionville were tempted to look past its 20th seeded opponent on Thursday, Indians’ head coach Rich Garber only needed to point out that Council Rock North ended league rival West Chester Henderson’s season just two days earlier.

With that in mind, Unionville cruised to a 3-0 victory over visiting CR North to advance to the District 1 4A boys’ soccer quarterfinals to be held on Saturday. The fourth-seeded Indians will take on the (5) Conestoga-(12) Harriton winner with a spot in the semifinals at stake as well as an automatic berth into the PIAA playoffs.

“We weren’t looking past (CR North),” Garber said. “We’ve played them in three of the last four years. They beat us at our place a couple years back.”

Now 17-2-1 overall, Unionville notched its 14th shutout of the season. Council Rock North’s season ends at 11-7-2.

“There are no easy wins from this point forward,” Garber predicted. “We’ve been off a week and you never know how they are going to respond. But we probably had the best week of practice we’ve had all year. I thought our leadership stepped up and we were more focused that we have been.”

The Indians notched goals in the opening minutes of each half to take command, and even though CR North’s size and athleticism was a challenge, Unionville still registered the clean scoring sheet.

“We are not huge, so we have to use our technical ability and try to pass the ball a little bit,” Garber explained.

Junior forward Haden Quillman put the Indians on the board in the opening 10 minutes on a big scrum in front of the CR North goal. Junior midfielder Kyle Ketterer then notched two goals in the second half, with the first coming about five minutes in.

“That first goal was just gutsy – just get there,” Garber said. “And the third one was the same thing.”
