Eagles blank Mifflin in division battle
The Governor Mifflin and Exeter Township high school boys soccer teams clashed at Don Thomas Stadium in Exeter Township on Sept 30. The Eagles, as they have been most of the season, were dominant in the match. With a shots on goal edge of 22-2, the Eagles blanked the Mustangs, 5-0.
The win gives Exeter Township a 4-2 record in the Berks League which places them second in Division 1. It’s not a bad place to be, but first place is beginning to look far, far away. The Wilson Bulldogs hold first place in the division tightly in their hands with a 6-0 record, including a 3-1 victory over Exeter at Wilson on Sept. 23. The two teams will battle each other once again in the last game of the league season on Oct. 12. This one will be in Exeter and the Eagles will have to win that one if they have any shot at the division title. What hurt Exeter was a 1-0 home loss to Reading early in the season. Reading is 3-3 in the Berks League and the victory over Exeter was definitely an upset, and one that could cost Exeter the division.
Meanwhile, Governor Mifflin has struggled through a frustrating 1-5 league season. The Mustangs are in last place in Division 1 with their only win coming against Reading, 3-2 on Sept. 21. Although they have lost five of six Berks League games, the Mustangs have only given up four more goals then they have scored. They tight games just aren’t going their way.
Last week’s loss to Exeter wasn’t one of those close ones. Exeter scored three first half goals, then added two more in the second half for insurance. Nick Leinbach continued his great play this season, scoring three goals and throwing in an assist. Leinbach leads the Exeter team in scoring, and is in the top 10 in the league with 10 goals and four assists. Tyler Conrad had a goal and two assists, while Cody Hart also scored a goal. Cade DiGuardi and Matt Lee had one assist apiece.
There were only two shots that made it to the Exeter net, but Jose Aparicio and Ryan Malone each stopped one of them as they shared the goal in the match.
The Mustangs had a chance to gain some revenge on Reading High when the two teams met in Reading on Oct. 5. Due to our press deadline, we are unable to report the result of the contest. The Eagles are at Daniel Boone on Oct. 7, then at Muhlenberg on Saturday, Oct. 10 before ending the regular season against Wilson.
The Mustangs host Reading on Sept. 7, then visit Daniel Boone on Sept. 1-0 before ending the season at home against Muhlenberg.
