Five Delco squads earn District 1 lacrosse tourney byes
The first round of the District 1 Class 3A boys and girls lacrosse tournaments won’t include any Delco teams, since all five of the qualifiers rated byes, per brackets released Saturday.
Springfield is the No. 1 overall seed in the boys bracket. The Cougars, No. 4 Garnet Valley and No. 6 Radnor warrant byes until Thursday’s second round. On the girls side, Garnet Valley finished second to Central League rival Harriton in the seeding consideration but still gets a bye. Central League winner Radnor is the No. 6 seed, also getting a bye.
The rankings weren’t favorable for Penncrest (9-8), which finished 25th and just outside the field for the girls, and the Haverford girls (9-9, 27th seed).
On the girls side, Springfield is the second seed in the Class 2A tournament, opening the 16-team playoffs with a visit from No. 15 Merion Mercy Tuesday. No. 9 Interboro (to eighth-seed Mount St. Joseph) and No. 13 Strath Haven (to No. 4 Bishop Shanahan) have road games Thursday.
Strath Haven garners the No. 2 seed in the Class 2A boys tournament, which comprises eight teams. The Panthers will host No. 7 Marple Newtown in an All-Central clash Wednesday night. No. 4 Penncrest hosts No. 5 Holy Ghost Prep, while Interboro earns its way back into the playoffs as the No. 6 seed, venturing to No. 3 Springfield-Montco.
