Quick-strike goals lead Wissahickon past Holy Ghost Prep
LOWER GWYNEDD — The Wissahickon boys lacrosse team squashed any hope Holy Ghost Prep had of a comeback early in the second half of the first round of the District One AAAA playoffs. The Trojans scored three goals in the first 2:14 of the third quarter to extend a three-goal lead to six and cruised to a 10-5 win Tuesday night.
John Carrozza, Nate Degroat and Eric Kauffman each scored in the first couple of minutes after the break and Carrozza and Degroat each scored again later in the third and the Trojans headed to the final 12 minutes with a 9-1 lead.
“Third quarter we started to find their weaknesses,’ Wissahickon coach Dan Layfield said. “I thought we had looks early, but we weren’t finishing… It was good to start to see some of those shots fall.’
The Trojans (15-3, 12-2) fell behind 1-0 before scoring nine unanswered. The run was due to a great offense that possessed the ball nearly the entire game and a defense that forced turnovers.
“We had a game plan with one of their best players (Mike Major),’ Layfield said. “I think we did all right. We broke down a few times. Overall I think we played well against him and their offense.’
The Firebirds (8-11) goal to open the game came from Sean Terry. Their other goals — all coming in the fourth — were scored by Major, Matthew Roxberry and Anthony Gentile.
Jack Shea scored in the first goal for Wissahickon to tie the game at one and Kauffman gave the Trojans a 2-1 edge. Thomas Clements and Degroat each scored in the second to make it a 4-1 game heading to the half.
