Souderton outlasts Interboro
Franconia — After dropping its season-opener to Suburban One Continental opponent Hatboro-Horsham earlier in the week, Souderton looked to notch its first win of the season against Interboro while also trying to snap a seven-game losing streak dating back to last year.
Souderton was able to outlast Interboro in a game that featured dramatic ebbs and flows to notch its first win of the season with a solid 7-6 victory.
“We had a pretty serious letdown earlier this week and it was a good way for the guys to comeback and fight through some adversity and get a win here tonight,’ Souderton coach Mark Princehorn said.
Souderton got the first tally of the game, the first five to be specific, but it was the first goal of the game that was really indicative of how the game went and possibly how the season will likely go for the Indians.
Souderton goalie Remi Reeves made a point black save on an Interboro shooter and immediately sprinted to about midfield where Reeves passed the ball to midfielder Cordell Armstrong who passed it to Trent Breneman who scored on the Indians first shot of the contest after Interboro fired about five or six in the direction of Reeves.
“If this was hockey where you assist the assist Rem would definitely be hitting the stat chart,’ Princehorn said. “That’s the athleticism that he brings. A lot of people have this connotation on goalies that they’re not athletic guys and Remi is definitely one of the most athletic guys on our team.’
After Souderton took its 5-0 lead in the second quarter it looked like the Indians where in the driver’s seat, however the Souderton lead would not even hold until halftime as Interboro responded with five straight of its own including two from senior midfielder Dave Kilgore.
It would take until the last five minutes of the contest before the game saw its next goal as senior attackman Greg Gibbs netted one with 4:36 remaining and sophomore midfielder Jake Phaup scored the eventual game winner just 13 seconds later.
“Greg is our returning leading scorer and a phenomenal player,’ Princehorn said. “Greg brings it every game and it was a really good game (for him).’
As Interboro pulled to within a goal with just over a minute left, Reeves put his fingerprints on the game with one more huge save on an Interboro attack with 44 seconds remaining, preserving the Indian victory.
“You see the kind of leadership and good play he brings,’ Princehorn said of Reeves. “The clearing, the groundballs, he brings you a lot more than just making saves. It was definitely a total team effort; he definitely helped us out a lot but in the end. Team sport, team game, team win.’
