Pennsbury falls short in PIAA quarterfinal with Roman Catholic
NORRISTOWN — With 3.1 seconds left and his team trailing by a point in a PIAA quarterfinal battle with Roman Catholic, no one would blame senior Cameron Jones if he got a weak shot off in his last attempt in a Falcon uniform.
But Pennsbury’s point guard was not about to let the season slide by that easily. Jones threw up an excellent shot that hit the backboard right on the square. Unfortunately, the ball bounced off the inside of the rim and out and there lie Jones sprawled out horizontally at mid-court. When the ball failed to go into the basket, the senior saw four years of varsity ball flash by him in an instant.
With 15 points and nine assists, Jones had done his best trying to help the Falcons (25-7) unseat the top-ranked team in Pennsylvania in the PIAA Elite Eight. His fourth trey of the game had deadlocked this see-saw affair Saturday afternoon at Norristown at 57, apiece with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
Unfortunately for Pennsbury, Roman’s point guard Tony Carr drew the foul with three seconds left then hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Cahillites the winning edge. Roman (27-2) advances to face District 8 rival JP McCaskey — a 60-59 winner over LaSalle — on Tuesday at a time and place to be determined.
