Nelson Jr. starts fast in Haverford School win

Jameer Nelson Jr. got off to a blazing start, scoring half of his 16 points in a game-opening 25-11 spurt, and even though Haverford School cooled off considerably, the Fords had enough cushion to hold off Central Bucks South, 63-57, Thursday in the Athletes Helping Athletes showcase at Council Rock North.

Kharon Randolph and Christian Ray added 14 points apiece for Haverford School (9-1), which sank five shots from beyond the arc in the opening eight minutes, but never made another trey on the night.

At the Benedictine Capital City Classic:

Archbishop Carroll 60, Germantown Academy 34 >> The Patriots improved to 8-1 with the romp through Richmond, Va., as Keyon Butler dropped in 20 points and AJ Hoggard garnered the tourney MVP honors.

At the Jameer Nelson Classic:

Abington 53, Chester 50 >> Jordan Camper fashioned his fourth double-double of the season, collecting 12 points and a dozen boards to go with two blocks, Jamar Sudan had a team-high 15 points and Ahrod Carter dropped in 11, but the Clippers (4-2) saw a late rally fall short after falling behind 20-9 at the outset.

Atlantic City 55, Episcopal Academy 51 >> Conner Delaney led all scorers with 23 points, Matt Dade netted 14 and Jack O’Connell scored all of his 12 points from beyond the arc for the Churchmen (7-6), who were forced to play catch-up after a slow start.

At the Penncrest Holiday Tournament:

Penncrest 57, WC Henderson 34 >> Tyler Norwood’s 26-point performance locked up the MVP trophy, and he was joined on the all-tourney team by teammates Justin Ross (14 points) and Manny Ruffin, as the Lions (7-2) won their seventh consecutive game in dominant fashion.

At the Marple Newtown Christmas Tournament:

Bonner & Prendergast 68, Marple Newtown 46 >> Dylan Higgins led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds while Tymir Cooper (seven assists) and Donovan Rodriguez added 10 points apiece as the Friars made themselves at home, connecting on 66 percent of their shots in the title game. Mark Dever scored 15 and Mike May netted 14 for the host Tigers (3-5).

At the Varsity Club Tournament:

Lansdale Catholic 63, Garnet Valley 47 >> Brandon Starr lived up to his billing with 24 points, including four 3-point baskets, and a dozen rebounds, but a second-half slump sunk the Jaguars (6-3) in the championship game.

Sun Valley 47, Archmere Academy 40 >> The tandem of Vinny Deangelo (15 points) and Dom Valente (12) keyed a fast start that carried the Vanguards to the consolation game win.

At the Steve Juenger Tournament:

Academy Park 45, Haverford 26 >> Nick Simmons (13 points) and Shermik Lofton (MVP) were named to the all-tourney team for the Knights, who seized command by opening the title game on an 18-3 run. Trey Blair, with nine points, was the lone all-tourney pick for the Fords (1-7).
