Isaiah Wong, Eric Dixon lead We R 1 to Donofrio Classic title
CONSHOHOCKEN >> The outcome was never truly in doubt.
We R 1 led Waterview Triple Threat nearly the entire way to win the 59th Annual Albert C. Donofrio Classic championship, 110-97, Tuesday night at the Fellowship House of Conshohocken.
When Waterview Triple Threat made its last push — cutting its deficit to 45-38 late in the first half — We R 1’s Isaiah Wong shut down any ideas at a possible comeback.
The Bonner & Prendergast senior and Miami commit posterized a defender with a one-hand slam with less than a minute remaining before halftime to bring the crowd to its feet and extend We R 1’s lead to nine.
After the teams traded baskets, We R 1 called timeout with less than 10 seconds left in the half. Wong caught the inbounds pass and hit a deep three as the buzzer sounded to send his side into the locker room with a 52-41 advantage.
“We were trying to get Eric (Dixon) the ball,” Wong, who was named Most Valuable Player, said. “I was a secondary player. I got the ball and I felt like I could shoot from that range and I hit the shot.”
“(Wong) always does stuff that’s electric for us,” Dixon added. “All of us do. (Chereef Knox) will get a dunk, (Wong) will get a dunk, I’ll get a dunk, (Tyriq Ingraham) will get a dunk, (Nah’Shon Hyland) will cross somebody over. We all just feed off each other’s energy and today that was Isaiah.”
We R 1 maintained the double-digit advantage throughout the second half and cruised to the final buzzer.
Wong finished with a team-high 27 points. Dixon, an Abington senior and Villanova commit, added 26 and Hyland (St. Georges Tech) had 21.
Donta Scott, an Imhotep senior and Maryland commit, scored a game-high 34 points for Waterview and Jameer Nelson Jr., a Haverford School senior and George Washington commit, added 22.
Cheltenham senior Kyin Healey scored four points on 2-for-4 shooting with a rebound for Waterview.
