Exeter’s Dan Garcia signs to play basketball at Alvernia University

After completing a very successful high school basketball career this winter, Exeter senior Dan Garcia went looking for a college where he could continue to play the sport he loves. When he visited Alvernia University in Reading, he liked what he saw. It was not only a nice campus and close by, but he would be joining a men’s basketball program that has won three consecutive Commonwealth Conference championships and four over the last five years.

“It really was a good fit for me,’ said Garcia. “I like that it’s close to home and I will be part of a team that has had a lot of success over the past few years. I like the coaches and I just feel that I will be very comfortable there.’

Garcia, a point guard at Exeter Township High School, hopes to play point guard for the Crusaders as well. This year there were two senior guards on the Alvernia team, so there will be some openings for Garcia to fill. He’s hoping to get some significant playing right off the bat in his freshman year.

“I’m hoping I’ll be able to get some minutes next year,’ said Garcia. “I’ll just have to work hard and see what happens.’

Garcia missed most of the 2014-15 season at Exeter due to an injury. As a junior, he was second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.9 points a game for the Eagles. He played his sophomore season at Reading High School, transfering to Exeter after his sophomore year.

“The transition from Reading to Exeter went well for me,’ said Garcia. “We had two good seasons at Exeter and I’ll miss my teammates when I go to Alvernia’

Garcia visited the campus at Alvernia a month ago. He liked what he saw.

“Everybody knows everybody else there,’ said Garcia. “I really liked that about Alvernia. It’s a small school and everybody will do anything to help other students out because everybody knows each other.’

Dan is nervous, but excited about playing college level basektball.

“It’s a more physical and faster game,’ he said. “Also there’s a shot clock in college which will be something for me to get used to next year. I’ll have to deal with that, but I’m looking forward to it.’
