The Pottsgrove boys basketball team, with Flanagan in his first year as head coach, got him a win over the squad he previously coached from its inception. With Nik Curnew and Steve Hein leading the offense, the Falcons made a big early lead hold up for a 60-49 victory over Pope John Paul II in a meeting of Pioneer Athletic Conference Frontier Division schools Thursday.
Curnew came away with game scoring honors, collecting 16 points — six of them off baskets from 3-point range — and seven assists. Hein chipped in with another 10 as Pottsgrove opened a 34-20 lead at the half and went into the fourth quarter up 52-32.
PJP, which had a 17-8 lead in fourth-quarter scoring, got nine points from Aidan McCarthy and eight from Dan Cirino, Fracis Interrante and Ricky Bearden. Damir Johnson, with eight boards, headed Pottsgrove’s 31-27 advantage off the glass, with PJP getting eight from Bearden.
