Dodds’ layup stuns Coatesville, lifts Shanahan into first-place tie
DOWNINGTOWN >> The way Bishop Shanahan’s David Angelo calmly walked up the floor Tuesday night, you would have never known there were just seven seconds left in what had been a wild game against first-place Coatesville.

And his calm demeanor sure didn’t give away the fact that his Eagles trailed by one point.
But as the crowd came to its feet, Angelo weaved through the Red Raiders defense before hitting Kevin Dodds beneath the hoop with a perfect pass. Dodds finished off the layup as the clock expired, and Bishop Shanahan posted a wild 49-48 win over Coatesville, handing the Red Raiders their first Ches-Mont League loss of the season and putting both teams into a first-place tie atop the standings.
“I mean to beat a great team like Coatesville is just a great feeling,” Dodds said. “David brought the ball up and hit me with the pass and I did not want to let my teammates down. I just had to make that layup. We never lost our composure and we just kept battling and came out on top. they are such a tough team to play. This is an awesome feeling.”
For most of the contest, Coatesville (7-1 Ches-Mont, 12-4 overall) had control of the game. The Red Raiders led 25-19 at halftime and looked to extend that lead in the third quarter. Behind the hot shooting of Jhamir Brickus and Kamau Brickus, the Red Raiders took a 28-19 advantage with just over six minutes to play in the third period. Jhamir Brickus led all scorers with 21 points on the night. But the Eagles (7-1, 11-5) did not quit. They came roaring back behind the team high 18 points by Angelo and Dan Browne’s 11 points to garner the thrilling win.
Angelo drained four 3-pointers and Dodds hauled in 10 rebounds, and both fed off the raucous crowd to help close the gap to 35-34 after three quarters, as the Eagles outscored the Red Raiders 15-10 in the period. The Eagles shot five for 10 in the third after shooting an ice cold six for 21 in the first half.
“The kids never lost their composure and stayed calm the whole night,” said Bishop Shanahan coach Ken Doyle. “Every time it looked like Coatesville was going to extend, the kids kept fighting and just worried about the next possession.”
The fourth period featured more frantic play as the teams dove for every loose ball and hotly contested every rebound. After an Eagles turnover, Dapree Bryant drove the lane, got fouled and hit one of two free throws to make it a 43-42 Shanahan lead.
Dan Browne came down the floor and missed a jumper and Joe Boulware grabbed the rebound and fed Bryant who drove the lane but missed in tight. Shanahan’s Thomas Ford grabbed the rebound and got fouled with 1:21 to play. Ford missed the front end of the one and one and Coatesville grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 1:14 to play.
Coatesville took the lead back when Jhamir Brickus hit both free throws to make it a 45-44 Red Raider lead. Shanahan came down the floor and missed and after Tyrel Bladen grabbed the rebound, Kamau Brickus got fouled and hit one free throw to make it a 45-43 Coatesville lead. With the crowd roaring, Angelo came up the floor and hit Browne on the left wing. Browne went strong to the basket, scored, got fouled and hit the free throw for a 46-45 Eagles advantage.
“I just wanted to go to the basket and hopefully get fouled,” Browne said. “But, I found room and scored. We felt we could compete with them although we lost to them earlier in the season. We have put some wins together and came out and played real hard tonight.”
Coatesville was not done however. Kamau Brickus drove up the floor, went to the basket and missed the shot, but Boulware put the rebound in for a 47-46 Coatesville lead with just seven seconds to play, setting up Dodds’ heroics.
After Dodds shot went in, the Shanahan student section stormed the floor and mobbed the Eagles players, showing the emotion that a win over a storied program like Coatesville deserves.
“We looked like we were going to pull away in the third period,” said Coatesville assistant coach Marquis Boggs, who was filling in for head coach Chuck Moore, who missed the game due to illness. “But Shanahan kept fighting and fighting and forced us into some bad plays.”
“During the timeout we said to just run our normal press break,” Doyle said. “We changed some things because they were overplaying some guys. But David did a great job getting the ball to Kevin and we came out with the win.”
