Conestoga’s Zach Lezanic is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

Zach Lezanic

The senior guard and captain scored his 1,000th career point in the Pioneers’ win against Upper Darby Feb. 7, reaching that milestone in three years and leading Conestoga in assists during that period as well. Conestoga boys’ basketball head coach Mike Troy said, “People don’t realize just how special a player Zach is. Zach gets as much joy making a pass for a teammate to score as he does scoring himself. He is a very competitive player who wants to do whatever the team needs him to do to win. His court vision and basketball IQ are at a very high level, and he’s a terrific leader. The best part about Zach, though, is that he is an even better young man than he is a basketball player – it is an honor to coach him.”

Q: Tell us a little about your 1,000th point, how you scored and how that particular play developed prior to your score. Were you aware when you scored it that it was your 1,000th point?

A: I knew before the game how many points I needed, and I was getting to the rim pretty easily in the first quarter. For my 1,000th point, I came down, did a hesitation and go on my defender, got in the lane, jumped, stopped and spun and got a layup. This was a really cool moment for me and something I have dreamed of getting at a very young age.

Q: You were in the middle of the action in back-to-back overtime wins against Haverford High and Ridley a week ago, scoring a combined 46 points as Conestoga was battling for a Central League playoff spot. What was the key to your productive scoring in those games?

A: The Haverford and Ridley games were key not only for Central League standing but for Districts as well. I was just trying to do what my team needed me to do and that was run the show. It happened that I was getting to the line a bunch and I had to make scoring plays down the stretch.

Q: What part of your game are you working on the most currently?

A: Being a true point guard, I’ve worked on communication with teammates and a being a leader. I’ve really focused on making sure my voice is heard and being there for all my teammates. Leadership is needed on a team and has been something I have been working on.

Q: What has been your most memorable experience as a Conestoga basketball player?

A: Playoff atmosphere is a memorable experience; it is so cool playing in front of thousands with a championship or a spot in States on the line.

Q: What do you think you’d like to major in at college? Is there a career path that particularly interests you at the present time?

A: Business or sports medicine are two areas in which I am interested in. But I will most likely go undecided my freshman year.

Q: Tell us a little about your pre-game preparation the day of a game.

A: I like to drink a lot of water and stretch a lot. I like to also get in the gym and work on my handle and jump shot before the game as well

Q: Who is your favorite basketball player, and why?

A: Kobe Bryant is my favorite all time player, I just love his mentality and his winning attitude.

Q: You wear No. 5 for Conestoga – why did you pick this number – does it have any special significance to you?

A: I chose No. 5 because I was that number from 3rd through 8th grade and it is my favorite number.
