Reporter/Times Herald Baseball Roundup: North Penn edges CB West on Sullivan’s sac fly
North Penn 7, Central Bucks West 6 >> Evin Sullivan broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning as his bases-loaded sacrifice fly scored Steven Corrado and North Penn held on to win Wednesday’s SOL Colonial Division contest.
Sullivan finished 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, Corrado scored twice and Jeffrey Sabater went 2-for-2 with two runs scored for the Knights (3-0, 1-0 division).
CB West (0-3, 0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but North Penn tied things in the bottom of the inning before scoring three times in the second. The Bucks knotting the contest with a three-run top of the third then plated two in the fourth to go up 6-4. The Knights, however, answered in their half of the fourth with two runs to pull level 6-6.
Eric Hamilton pitched four scoreless inning in relief to earn the win for North Penn. He gave up three hits, no walks and struck out three.
Maxwell Grill went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for CB West, who collected a total of 11 hits. James Carbone was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Andrew Kohl finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Mike Boyle scored twice.
Abington 11, Upper Dublin 7 >> Upper Dublin took a 7-6 lead with two runs in the the top of the sixth but Abington responded by scoring five times in the bottom of the inning – the last two on an Anthony Ehly double – as the Ghosts came away with the SOL Liberty win.
Henry Tyler was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Abington (1-2, 1-0 division) while Ehly and Alex Dardaris each had two RBIs.
Tristan Cairnes’ solo home run gave Upper Dublin a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with the Cardinals going up 3-0 in the third. Abington recorded its first five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Upper Dublin tied the contest with a Cairnes RBI double and Karan Acharya RBI sacrifice fly. Abington regained the lead on Dardaris’ RBI sac fly in the bottom of the fifth. Kyle Rizzo’s two-RBI single in the top of the sixth had UD back up 7-6.
Cairnes went 2-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBIs and a run scored for the Cards. Rizzo was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Leo Soriano scored twice.
Plymouth Whitemarsh 6, Quakertown 1 >> Joe Jaconski had a big day as Plymouth Whitemarsh won its SOL Liberty opener, the North Carolina commit going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored.
The Colonials (2-0, 1-0 division) scored the game’s opening run in the bottom of the third then added two in the fifth to go up 3-0.
Quakertown (0-3, 0-1) scored on a passed ball in the top of the sixth to pull within 3-1 but PW responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, the first two on Jaconski’s double with Jack Hildebrand plating another with his single.
Hildebrand finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while PW starting pitcher Joe Rauscher picked up the win, allowing one run – unearned – on one hit, walked five and struck out seven in five innings.
Hatboro-Horsham 6, Wissahickon 2 >> Hatboro-Horsham broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth as they went on to win the SOL Liberty matchup.
Cole Fisher finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Hatters (2-2, 1-0 division) while Noah Gremo collected two RBIs.
Wissahickon took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth on Grayson Lovitz’s bases-loaded walk and an RBI sac fly from Kasey Weiss. A Gremo RBI ground out tying the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Hatboro-Horsham took the lead for good in its half of the fifth – Logan Fisher getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while Nick Katherine’s RBI sacrifice made it 4-2.
The Hatters pushed their advantage to four runs in the sixth with RBI singles by Jack Elwell and Cole Fisher.
HH starting pitcher Jimmy Tooley went six innings in earning the win, allowing two runs – both unearned – on one hit, walked one, hit two batters and struck out four.
