Malvern Prep baseball squad wins Bishop Eustace tournament

The Malvern Prep baseball squad captured the Bishop Eustace Tournament, defeating Bishop Eustace in the championship final with a 10-run rule after five innings.

The Friars were hot offensively this game all around. Sean Flynn got the start, and was the winning pitcher for Malvern, striking out four and allowing no earned runs on one hit. Malvern put the game out of reach in the third inning when Will Burgess hit a bases clearing double. Burgess finished with four RBIs. Matt Daller also had a great day at the plate, doubling twice and adding two RBIs. Nick Li also had two RBIs.

In the semifinal, Malvern Prep defeated St. Augustine, 2-1, with a walk off single by senior Jake Mullan. Going into the bottom of the seventh, down 1-0, Malvern had no hits. Cam Williams led the seventh inning off getting hit by a pitch. Then Shane Muntz ended the no hitter, hitting a game-tying triple over the right fielder’s head. Mullan ended it with a single up the middle. Malvern starting pitcher Jalen Wade went six strong innings, striking out 10 and allowing one earned run. The winning pitcher was Jimmy Kingsbury who came in in the seventh inning and shut down St. Augustine’s.

Two days earlier, in an InterAc contest, Malvern Prep defeated Germantown Academy, 3-2. Sophomore Brady Devereux got the start for Malvern. Jimmy Kingsbury came in relief and was the winning pitcher for the second consecutive game. Kingsbury pitched 2.1 innings of no-hit baseball while he struck out two. Billy Corcoran struck out five batters in two innings to earn the save. In the bottom of the first, Jake Mullan picked up two RBIs to lead Malvern. With the score tied 2-2, Shane Muntz added an RBI double for the winning run.

Conestoga came back to defeat Harriton, 10-7, Thursday. After trailing Harriton by a score of 7-1 going into the sixth inning, Conestoga erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open.  Alex Lee, Tim Miller, Tom Fogarty and Angus Mayock all had two hits apiece for the pioneers.  Senior Mark Anderson pitched the final 3 and 1/3 innings without giving up a run and fanning five.  He also had a two-run double in the sixth inning.  With the win, Conestoga improved to 5-0 in the Central League.
