Springfield’s Smith fans 9, no-hits Penncrest
Michael Smith twirled a masterpiece in Springfield’s 2-0 Central League baseball victory over Penncrest Wednesday.
Smith pitched a no-hitter and struck out nine while allowing only two walks. He erased one of two baserunners with a pickoff throw.
Nick Gorman supplied the only power of the afternoon, an RBI double in the first inning to put the Cougars ahead. Smith had a bunt single to account for the second and final hit off Penncrest pitcher Dillon Armstrong, who also shined in the pitchers’ duel. Armstrong gave up two hits and walked none in the tough-luck loss.
