Main Line roundup (Jan. 24): Radnor boys basketball team tops Aces

The Radnor High School basketball team improved its record to 17-0 with a 64-41 victory at Lower Merion Jan. 24. The Raptors held a slender 24-23 halftime lead, then outscored the Aces 21-5 in the third quarter. Charlie Thornton and Jackson Gaffney combined for 29 points for Radnor, while teammate Jackson Hicke grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out eight assists. For the Aces (15-2), Sam Brown tallied 16 points.

Boys’ basketball

Episcopal Academy defeated Delco Christian, 66-51, Jan. 24. Kevin McCarthy led the Churchmen with 22 points, and teammates Eddie Jones and Timmy Dennis each chipped in with 10 points.

Harriton defeated Haverford High, 59-47, Jan. 19. The Rams were led by Marquis Kubish (34 points, eight rebounds). Harriton held a slender 22-21 lead at halftime, then came out of the break on a 13-0 run to break the game open. Kubish scored eight of the Rams’ 13 points in the run. Googie Seidman led Haverford with 17 points.

 

Girls’ basketball

Agnes Irwin lost to Gloucester Catholic, 54-37, Jan. 23. The Owls were led by Simone Harvey (17 points) and Gabrielle Seibert (seven points).

Three days earlier, the Owls beat Springside on Senior Night, 45-30. Leading scorers for Agnes Irwin were Simone Harvey with 11 points and Madigan Morrissey with 11 points.

Archbishop Carroll defeated West Chester Rustin, 58-49, Jan. 16. Taylor Wilson, an Army commit, led Carroll with 16 points and was named game MVP.  Freshman Alexis Eberz also tallied 16 points while Brooke Wilson added 12 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.

Barrack Hebrew Academy defeated Sacred Heart, 48-40, Jan. 24. The Cougars were led by Sami Neff (16 points), Eden Singer (10), Noa Singer (10) and Mikayla Trajtenberg (8).

One day earlier, the Cougars defeated Cristo Rey, 47-32, led by Singer (15 points) and Trajtenberg (10 points).

Conestoga defeated Great Valley, 59-37, Jan. 21. The Pioneers were led by Janie Preston (18 points), Marisa Francione (nine points, nine assists), Ryann Jennings (eight points, four assists) and Maggie Neary (seven points, four rebounds).

Haverford High School defeated Academy of Notre Dame, 54-42, in the 16th annual Hoops for Hope Tournament at Ursinus College Jan. 16. Senior forward and Maine-commit Caroline Dotsey (24 points, 5 rebounds) led Haverford to their 14th win on the season. Aniya Eberhart added 10 points for the Fords including a 6-for-7 effort from the foul line down the stretch. Lizzie Halligan and Katie Halligan each scored 12 points to lead Notre Dame.

Ford girls basketball head coach Lauren Pellicane said, “This event continues to showcase some of the top girls basketball programs in the area and brings together communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. We are very thankful to Ursinus College and the women’s basketball program led by head coach Bobbi Morgan for helping to host the event this season as well as the handful of volunteers, including all of our PIAA referees, for their time and energy in making a tournament of this magnitude a success.”

Merion Mercy Academy lost to Mount St. Joseph’s, 54-39, Jan. 24. Julia Richardson (15 points) and Mary Kate Gray (14) led Merion in scoring in this AACA regular season game.

Three days earlier, the Golden Bears lost to Marple Newtown, 35-29. Mary Kate Gray led Merion with 15 points.

On Jan. 19, Merion Mercy lost to Villa Joseph, 35-33. Maggie Iannone led Merion with 13 points and Julia Richardson added 12 points.
