OTD in 2012: Coatesville bounces back against Unionville to spark epic run

The heart-breaking, one-point, last-second loss to Downingtown East surely stung Coatesville, but it may have been the best thing that ever happened to the Red Raiders, in 2012.

Coatesville rallied and took one of the best teams in District 1 to the brink, and found something special, offensively, along the way.

The next 10 weeks, well, just imagine those as the part of the movie where cool music plays over a five minute montage of insane highlights, high fives and celebrations.

When East took its lead in the final seconds of the week four matchup, that was the last time Coatesville trailed in a football game for 10 weeks, until the state semifinal against La Salle. In that span, the Red Raiders scored 443 points in those 38 quarters (and 26 seconds of the third against West Chester Henderson before the game was called due to lightning).

The first victim was Unionville, who hosted Coatesville on a Saturday afternoon for its Homecoming game.

From the get-go, the Red Raiders showed they were out for blood when Daquan Worley took the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.

Coatesville scored twice more in the first quarter. Emmett Hunt found Dre Boggs for an 11-yard TD and then Hunt snuck in another from a yard out.

Hunt finished the day with 241 yards and four TDs, the other three going to Jay Stocker, Vinny Williams and again to Boggs, on nine-of-13 passing. Hunt even caught a 21-yard pass from Chris Jones.

Hunt’s numbers at the midway point of the regular season were 1,237 yards, 16 TDs and zero interceptions, with another pair of scores on the ground.

Boggs led all receivers with 82 yards, and while the offense was held under 100 yards rushing for fifth straight game, clearly the passing attack was becoming so potent, defenses would no longer be able to keep loading the box.

Isaiah Flamer picked off a pass for the defense, who held Unionville to 143 yards and recorded its second shutout in five games. Mike Boykin, Dylan Morgan, Joe Phillips and Flamer managed sacks for Coatesville, who moved to 3-2 with a 42-0 blanking of the Indians.

Next up for the Red Raiders, 2-2 Bishop Shanahan.
