Rustin knocks Downingtown East from undefeated ranks

DOWNINGTOWN-Saturday night at Kottmeyer Stadium the West Chester Rustin football team came in and played a near flawless football game to down previously undefeated Downingtown East 16-14, in a thrilling nonleague tilt.

West Chester Rustin (3-1) sealed the victory when Daimon Jacobs picked off a Jamy Jenkins pass at the West Chester Rustin 14 yard line with 1:14 to play in the fourth period. Jenkins had moved the Cougars (4-1) down the field completing his first five passes on the drive but Jacobs came up with the big play and the Golden Knights had their second straight win over the Cougars.

West Chester Rustin running back Dayshawn Jacobs was sensational, going for 190 yards on the ground and he even pulled out a fake punt from his immense bag of tricks in the fourth period that kept the ball away from the Downingtown East offense.

“Pretty much on every punt I have the option of either kicking the ball or reading the play and taking off if I see it can break,’ Dayshawn Jacobs said. “I read they and i had blocks so i took it down and went around the side for a first down. And i want to say the O-Line was great tonight. They were really firing off the blocks for me and the other backs.”

The golden Knights rolled up 304 yards on the ground and controlled the clock for most of the game. The Golden Knights struck first in the opening period when Chris Yanko went straight up the middle for a five yard touchdown run and the Golden Knights had a 7-0 lead.

Downingtown East came right back and the Cougars went on a drive of their own with Bo Horvath running inside the tackles and Horvath carried the ball the last eight yards and it was a 7-7 game after one period. Horvath was held to 78 yard son 17 carries by the Golden Knights defense.

West Chester Rustin scored early in the second period after a long run by Dayshawn Jacobs set the ball deep into Cougar territory. Hard running from fullback Anthony Meadows and Yanko got the ball down to the Downingtown East one yard line and quarterback Kolbe Freney went the final one yard and after a missed extra point, the Golden Knights took a 13-7 lead at halftime.

“Our guys up front were outstanding tonight,” West Chester Rustin head coach Mike St.Clair said. “And you cannot get two better line coaches than John Timko and Mike Mohring and they had those guys up front playing at a very high level tonight.”

The third period was scoreless except for the Golden Knights by-passing a fourth and three deep in Downingtown East territory and settling for a 25 yard field goal by Griffin Strunk that gave West Chester Rustin a 16-7 lead after three periods.

Early in the fourth period the Cougar defense forced a Golden Knights punt that went out of bounds at the West Chester Rustin 45 yard line. It only took the Cougars five plays to move the football into the end zone with Horvath cracking over the left side for a seven yard touchdown and the Cougars closed the gap to 16-14 with 9: 21 left to play.

The teams traded possessions and with 2:56 to play the Cougars had the ball at their own 20 yard line. Jenkins went to work right away. The big play was a 30 yard pass to Mike Giordino, who had a big game catching six balls for 135 yards. after an eight yard completion to George Bousum, Jenkins looked toward the end zone but his pass seemed to sail and Daimon Jacobs picked it off and the Golden Knights ran out the clock and came away with a very impressive win. Jenkins threw for 233 yards on the night but threw two big interceptions both by Daimon Jacobs.

“We heard a lot of talk that Downingtown had this game circled because they said it was a fluke we beat them last year,” Dayshawn Jacobs said. “Well, we had the game circled too. We wanted to show we are a very good team. It can’t be a fluke two years in a row.”

The loss was tough for the Cougars who still have to face a very tough schedule with undefeated Unionville coming into Kottmeyer Stadium next Friday night.

“When you hold a team to just 16 points you should win the darn game,” Downingtown East head coach Mike Matta said. “They scored on two short fields and you should win the game giving up 16 points.”
