Mercury Roundup (Sept. 25): Local cross country runners compete in Hershey

PIAA Foundation Invitational

HIGHLIGHTS: Owen J. Roberts had the area’s highest finishers of those participating in Saturday’s event at the Hershey Parkview 5K course.

Andrew McGonigle was second in the Boys Gold (AAA) race, the Roberts junior clocking a 16:33 that was five seconds behind race winner Cole Adams of York Suburban. Roberts’ top female runner was Claire Zubey, the junior placing third in 19:08.

McGonigle’s teammate Thomas Damiani also cracked the Top 10, the OJR senior running a 16:56 for the 10th spot.

Methacton’s Chris McGlynn led his team with a 16th (17:02), with teammates Bryan Landsberg 21st (17:11) and Vaughn Lackman 31st (17:22). Also placing in the Top 50 were Spring-Ford’s Quintin Smith (34th, 17:22) and OJR’s Matt Kwiatkowski (38th, 17:28).

Perkiomen Valley’s Thomas Bricker (61st) and Upper Perkiomen’s Donald Miller (65th) were their teams’ highest finishers. The boys blue (AA) race saw Pope John Paul II’s Jason DiMarco place 77th in a time of 19:12.

On the girls’ side in the Gold race, PV’s Summer Watts was 11th in 20:09, Phoenixville’s Anna Carruthers 15th in 20:18, OJR’s Ava Taylor 24th in 20:45, the Phantoms’ Alyssa Cunningham 38th in 21:08, PV’s Allison Matasich 42nd in 21:11, and Phoenixville’s Kenzie Padilla 44th in 21:17. Maren Landis was Upper Perk’s top finisher, going 62nd in 21:49.

In the Blue race for AA teams, Pope John Paul II’s Gianna Cagliola placed fifth in 20:37. Teammate Kathryn Todd was 29th in 21:50.

Council Rock Invitational

HIGHLIGHTS: Natalee Kryman and Hannah Santos posted Top 20 finishes for Daniel Boone in the invitational hosted by Council Rock North and staged at Tyler State Park.

Kryman and Santos went 18-19 in respective times of 21:34 and 21:36.1. Danielle Ferrara also placed in the Top 25, coming in 24th in a time of 21:58.

On the boys’ side, Cory Miller was the highest-finishing Blazer, coming in 21st in a time of 17:47.4.

FIELD HOCKEY

Hill School 8, Kinkaid School 3

Highlights: In a battle of two nationally ranked teams No. 7 Hill put up a dominant win over No. 8 Kinkaid School on Saturday at the Max Field Hockey National High School Invitational to capa 2-0 weekend for the Rams. Maggie Kondrath’s second-half delivered Hill a 1-0 win over No. 17 Garrison Forest School on Friday.

Kondrath tallied her first career hat trick in Saturday’s win with all three coming in the second period. Rease Coleman, Maddy Orsi (assist), Aubrey Turner and Ella Kaplan also scored in Hill’s win.

Coming off a shutout on Friday, Hala Silverstein made seven saves in Saturday’s win. Kerry Elliott added a defensive save.

HIGHLIGHTS: Despite winning the opener of both matches, the Warriors dropped a pair of non-league five setters Saturday, falling to Great Valley (15-25, 25-23, 25-20, 12-25, 16-14) and Conestoga (26-28, 25-23, 12-25, 25-17, 16-14)Methacton lost to Great Valley 2-3.  The set scores were 25-15, 23-25, 20-25, 25-12 and 14-16.

Upper Merion 3, Lansdale Catholic 0

HIGHLIGHTS: The Lady Vikings held off a determined Crusader team by scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-18.

Sophia Schweikert had 20 kills and 22 digs while Vanessa Hutchinson controlled the defense with her 30 digs. Caitlyn Daywalt had 27 assists. Julia Giammarco and Vanessa Hutchinson each had 4 aces. Camryn Frebowitz had 5 blocks and 3 kills and Despina Kourtidis had 3 blocks and 3 kills.

HIGHLIGHTS: Anna Buckwalter had two goals to key the Blazers’ showing in their game with the Panthers.

Erin Griffin and Maggie Holloway rounded out the scoring for Boone (7-3).

HIGHLIGHTS: Balanced scoring carried the Warriors to victory over the Jaguars.

Kirsten O’Brien opened the scoring in the 11th minute from a feed from center back Lizzie McNichol. Ruby Murray tallied early in the 2nd half, in the 43rd minute on a penalty kick. Aubrey Beaugard scored her 7th goal of the season after getting on the end of a Sarah Kenwood pass. Riley McDonald made 4 saves in the victory, while Garnet Valley keeper Alexandria Marren made 2 saves.

HIGHLIGHTS: Ella Stout’s six-save goaltending was the bright spot for the Phantoms in their loss to the Green Raiders.

HIGHLIGHTS: The Vikings completed their scoring in the first half, riding the advantage to victory over the Blazers.

PV scored early when Luke Hansen finished a scrum off a free kick. Grayson Boelter and Owen Slack each added a goal and assist in PV’s victory as they raced out to a 4-0 lead at half which held through the second half.

HIGHLIGHTs: An own goal proved the difference in the Indians’ non-league win Saturday. Matthew Fisher sent in a a corner, and after a mad scramble ensued the ball deflected off a Palisades defender for the game’s lone score.
