Friends’ Central defeated Shipley, 4-0, Tuesday in its league opener. FCS cashed in on two set pieces during the first half – one direct, and one indirect. The first was a beautifully placed finish from Jesse Rubin in the 27th minute, while the latter was a powerful strike from Lorna MacFarlane after a Rubin lay-off. Defender Avital Schweitzer added the third goal in the 52nd minute, when her 40-yard strike dipped just under the crossbar and into the net. Jesse Rubin added the insurance tally in the 72nd minute, when she took a fine feed from MacFarlane and laced it into the top corner. Strong play from the entire Phoenix back line led to their sixth clean sheet of the season.
