FRANCONIA >> All things considered, it was a valuable experience for Spring-Ford Saturday.
More valuable than the runner-up trophy the Rams took home from the Big Red Duals. The 16-team competition hosted by Souderton gave the locals a better feel for how they stand in anticipation of the District 1 Duals tournament, and a bit of a look at what the field outside the district.
Spring-Ford went 3-1 in the tourney, steamrolling Great Valley (65-3) and the host Indians (53-22) before handling Garnet Valley, 42-25. The run came to an abrupt halt, though, as it fell to District 11 Class AA power Saucon Valley, 55-15.
“It was a team effort,” head coach Tim Seislove noted. “We had kids bump around, and they fought strong. We had kids who made a lot of sacrifices.”
One particular star for the Rams was Cole Smith, whose 4-0 day featured three pins — the fastest, against Great Valley, coming in 32 seconds. The junior 113-pounder improved on the season to 11-2.
“I think I did very good,” Smith said. “My confidence was up, and I was ready to win.”
Anthony Attilio, who wrestled a majority of his bouts at 152 and one at 160, turned in another 4-0 outing for Spring-Ford. Quinn Smith went 3-1, pinning his opponents, and younger brother Gus had his own 3-1 day with a pin and a technical fall.
“We saw we have to work harder as a team,” Cole Smith said. “We have a lot to do if we’re going to win this next year.”
The title match with Saucon Valley saw the Panthers (9-1) take charge early, scoring a pair of pins and a decision. After forfeiting 152 to Attilio, SV rang up five straight falls between 160 and 285 for a match-clinching 45-6 lead with four weights left to contest.
Cole Smith’s 6-1 decision of Aiden Grogg halted the Panthers’ run, though it resumed with a pin at 120. Quinn Smith (20-4) finished the duel off with a 1:19 pin at 126.
“They’re ranked second in the state in Class AA,” Seislove said of Saucon Valley. “They’re strong, physical and good.”
In their match with Great Valley, the Rams (9-3) posted six pins and two technical falls. They ran off 35 unanswered points at the start before the Pats got their lone points at 160.
Against the Big Red, Spring-Ford broke out of a 12-12 tie with pins from Ryan Lepore (15-8) and Attilio (14-7). Its clincher came from Colbin Carpenter, whose 24-second drop at 285 gave the Rams a 42-22 lead prior to Gus and Cole Smith finishing up with a tech-fall and pin, respectively.
“He works hard for us ,,, fills in at 215 and wrestles hard,” Seislove said of Carpenter.
The Garnet Valley match started out nip-and-tuck, the Rams and Jaguars exchanging the lead five times through 285. But Spring-Ford’s lightweights took charge of the matter, pins by Gus and Cole Smith giving their team a deciding 36-25 lead before Dominic Ortliip finished off with a first-period pin at 120.
“We were not looked on highly by the rest of the district,” Cole Smith said. “Once we got pins, we sewed it up. That made us pretty happy.”
NOTES >> Seislove on his team’s posture in anticipation of a berth in the District 1 Duals field: “The district is wide open after the top three. The top 3-10, I think we’re in the middle of the pack.” … Garnet Valley placed third off a 37-31 verdict against Pennsbury. Timberline (N.H.) was fifth ahead of host Souderton (37-31) and Neshaminy placed seventh off a 39-28 win over Plymouth Whitemarsh. … The first three teams were presented trophies for their finishes.
