ABINGTON – In a tuneup for the upcoming Suburban One National League (SONL) Championships, visiting Council Rock South (17-2, 6-0: SONL) posted a resounding 82-0 triumph over SONL rival Abington Wednesday night on the Ghosts’ home court.
The Golden Hawks got pins from twins Cary (138 pounds) and Riley Palmer (145), L.J. Kahn (152), Cole Flanagan (160), Tyler Gettman (195) and Braden Ricchini (120).
Coming on the heels of a first place finish in the District 1 Class AAA Duals and an appearance in the PIAA semifinals, CR South started its night off with tech fall wins by sophomore Eric Woloshyn (126) and Zack Trampe (132).
Woloshyn won his match with Abington senior Matt Spross 17-2 just 43 seconds into the third period. Trampe shut out freshman Brian Spurrier 17-0 just 1:51 into the opening frame.
With his win, Trampe tied former CR South standout Austin Carter (Class of 2004) for the most wins in Golden Hawk wrestling history at 154. Zack will surely surpass that mark this weekend at SOLs.
Taking the mat shorthanded, the Galloping Ghosts were forced to sustain forfeits in six bouts and finished the season at 5-13, overall 1-5 in the SONL.
Both teams head to the SONL Championships this Saturday, Feb. 18 at Harry S Truman High School. The ultimate goal of each wrestler is to reach states. The Hawks placed six wrestlers in the PIAA Class AAA Tournament last year including Trampe, the Palmers and senior Joey Doyle (220).
Only Zack and Joey placed in states last year with Doyle taking fourth at 195 pounds and Trampe finishing sixth at 138.
Riley Palmer took a seventh-place medal in states as a 106-pounder in 2014 then had the misfortune of not making weight for SOLs in 2015 (wrestlers can’t advance if they don’t compete). He captured league, District 1 and South East Region title belts last year at 138 pounds then went 1-2 at states after suffering a pair of close losses to some pretty stiff competition.
The SONL champ at 126 pounds last season, Cary Palmer grabbed a D-1 runner-up and SE Region medal while also going 1-2 in states in 2016.
Of note, Doyle’s pin in the 30-29 comeback D-1 Duals Championship win over Boyertown put him past CR South alum Tim Riley (2011) in career wins by fall. Dustin Tancredi (2006) is first on that list with 88.
Joey followed up with pins in PIAA Duals bouts with Erie Cathedral Prep junior DyJheir Norman (0:49) and Nazareth sophomore Tucker Klump (0:21). The coach says the Ice Man should finish his career with the second-most pins in CR South wrestling history.
NOTES: Lucas Martoccio took a fourth-place PIAA medal in the 145-pound weight class and graduated in 2016.
