TOWAMENCIN >> Big Tyler Leidy secured the final points of a 6-1 decision over Trent Petro at the 285-pound match Wednesday night, giving a thumbs-up to the home crowd as he finished off a dominant evening for North Penn, an evening that began with Devon Weiss squeezing out a 5-4 decision at 120.
“Being the first guy, you always have to be the match maker,” Weiss said. “I went out there, wrestled as hard as I could.
“I knew I had to get that extra point,” he said with a smile, “so I wrestled hard and ended up getting it.”
For the Knights, the points would come in bunches from then on, as North Penn jumped out to a 29-0 lead and went on to a 36-21 victory over the rival Patriots in a Suburban One League Continental Conference matchup.
Weiss’ crucial escape locked up the 5-4 decision — he also had a takedown with just two seconds left in the second period, which proved to be pivotal.
“I knew I had to go right after him so he wouldn’t get the points,” Weiss said.
The Knights, who improved to 2-0 in the conference, would then get back-to-back pins from Khan Asif and Sofiane Bensmail at 126 and 132 in building a big lead early.
“I feel like we have some strong guys on our team,” Weiss said. “There are some places where we need to step it up a bit and make sure we can continue to have this undefeated streak. But overall, I think we’re doing very well. We have some very good wrestlers out there.”
With pins by Kyle Osting and Alec Sager, East (0-2 conference) got to within 33-18, but Leidy came through at 285.
Leidy finished up what Weiss had begun.
“He did a good job,” Knights coach Rob Shettsline said of the 120 pounder. “That’s what we needed, to start off that way.
“We were pretty solid through the middle there.”
North Penn heads to Liberty High School Monday to take on some top squads at the Hurricane Classic.
“I feel like we need some more practice – absolutely,” Weiss said. “There’s always things that we need to change and make better. I think we’ll give them a run for their money there.
“It’s very huge (to get an early win over East). It sets the tone for the rest of the season.”
