Harriton’s Felicity McFillin is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week (Jan. 16-22)

The 5-foot-8 junior guard and captain has been averaging 16 ppg, 6 rpg and 1.4 spg for the Rams this season. As a freshman, she helped the Rams reach the PIAA District 1 final for the first time in program history. Harriton girls’ basketball head coach Brian McCloskey said, “Her best attributes besides her shooting ability is her ability to make things happen, with and without the ball in her hand.  She does the dirty work when necessary and keeps a cool head.  She’s a gym rat, always the last to leave and her teammates feed off her energy.”

Q: What do you think has been the biggest keys to your offensive output this season?

A: Last year during the AAU spring and summer session my AAU coach Chris Wielgus gave me the ability to be an offensive threat and I leveraged that along with Coach McCloskey’s new offensive scheme to really take advantage of scoring opportunities.

Q: What aspect of your game did you work on most during the past off-season?

A: Seeing the entire court.  I love to drive to the rim, but I needed to learn to see open players when I drove to the lane.  That, and developing my mid-range jumper.

Q: What do you think are the biggest keys to effective rebounding?

A: Hustle and tenacity – find an opposing jersey, box out and get the ball.

Q: Tell us a little about your start in basketball. Have you always been a guard? Who have been your top basketball mentors, and what was the most important thing you learned from each of them?

A: Yes I have always been a guard.  I started playing meaningful basketball for St. Margaret’s CYO team.  I learned from a young age that my parents had two rules as it relates to sports – hustle and have fun.  I try to implement that into my game.  But winning is fun too.

Q: Who is your favorite basketball player and why?

A: My favorite basketball player is Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist because she is an all-around great player, and always has a great attitude.

Q: What has been your favorite experience to date with the Harriton girls’ basketball team?

A: Making it to the PIAA district final for the first time in Harriton women’s basketball history when I was a freshman.  Playing meaningful minutes for that team was a great experience.

Q: You wear uniform jersey No. 13 for the Harriton girls’ basketball team – is there a reason you chose that number?

A: I have been wearing the jersey No. 13 ever since 5th grade CYO when my mom picked it out for me.

Q: What is your favorite academic course at Harriton? What do you think you might like to major in when you go to college?

A: My favorite academic courses this year are AP US History and Sports Medicine.  In college I hope to major in business, specifically accounting.
