Main Line roundup: Lower Merion boys, Harriton girls basketball teams victorious

The Lower Merion boys’ basketball team earned a 74-71 overtime win against Springfield Jan. 7 at the Kobe Bryant Gymnasium, overcoming a 15-point Cougar lead in the first half and a nine-point lead by the visitors in the second half. Sam Brown scored his 1,000th career point, a 3-pointer, to give the Aces their first lead of the game with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter. Lower Merion needed a trey to tie on its final possession of regulation, and Sam Wright delivered it, to send the game into overtime.

Two days earlier, the Aces defeated Harriton, 75-59, getting a career-high 25 points from John Mobley and 15 points, six rebounds and five assists from Justin Poles.

The Harriton girls basketball squad defeated Upper Darby, 40-28, Jan. 7 behind the efforts of Maddie Bacine, who led the way with 20 points, five rebounds and two blocks and Maddie McFillin who added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. McFillin scored seven points in the third quarter to give the Rams a 25-18 lead, and Bacine scored nine points in the final period, including 5-for-6 from the free throw line.

Boys’ basketball

Haverford School defeated Bartram, 68-37, Jan. 3. The Fords (7-5) were led by Duke Cloran (13 points), Luke Rasmussen (11 points), Silas Graham (11 points) and Manny Butts (10 points).

Malvern Prep defeated Haverford School, 66-48, Jan. 6. Ryan Williams scored 16 points for the Friars, who also got 13 points each from Rowan Miller and Andrew Phillips. Manny Butts led the Fords with 12 points.

 

Girls’ basketball

Academy of Notre Dame defeated Agnes Irwin, 50-22, Jan. 3. The Irish were led by Katie Halligan (15 points), Lizzie Halligan (12 points) and Annie Greek (10 points).

Agnes Irwin lost to Germantown Academy Jan. 5. The Owls’ leading scorer was Simone Harvey with 16 points, including a trio of treys.

Barrack Hebrew Academy defeated Friends Select, 58-14, Jan. 5. The Cougars were led by Eden Singer (20 points), Noa Singer (12 points) and Mikayla Trajtenberg (nine points).

Conestoga (8-3) defeated Marple Newtown, 46-48, Jan. 5. The Pioneers were led by freshman Ryann Jennings (16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists), sophomore Janie Preston (13 points, 7 rebounds), junior Marisa Francione (9 points 5 assists, 4 rebounds) and junior Bella Valencia (6 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists).

Villa Maria Academy improved to 10-0 with a 53-29 win over Nazareth Academy Jan. 5. The Hurricanes got 16 points from Marah McHugh and 12 points from Clare Cronely.

 

Wrestling

Episcopal Academy lost to Springfield (Delco), 40-27, at the Battle of Valley Forge Duals Jan. 7. Winners for EA included 121-pounder Jack Signor (pin), 133-pounder Fernando Loor (pin), 215-pounder Vern Holley (8-1 win) and 285-pounder Victor Coleman (pin).

One day earlier, the Churchmen defeated Germantown Academy, 48-33. Episcopal Academy pins were recorded by Jack Signor (106 pounds) and Victor Coleman (285).

Haverford School finished eighth at the Bissell Invitational Jan. 7. Bill Brosko finished first at 285 pounds, earning a pin and a major decision en route to his first-place finish; and Jay McDonnell placed fourth at 126 pounds.

One day earlier, the Fords defeated Springside Chestnut Hill, 76-6. Haverford pins were scored by Eddie Grant (120 pounds), McDonnell (126), Jac Campbell (150), Cole Lisowski (160) and Matt Brosko (175).
