DLN Roundup: Villa Maria tops Nazareth to remain unbeaten
The Villa Maria basketball squad improved to 10-0 on Thursday with a convincing 53-39 triumph over Nazareth Academy. The Hurricanes led by seven through three quarters, but had an 18-11 edge in the final period. Marah McHugh had a game-high 16 points and Clare Cronley added 12 for Villa Maria.
Downingtown East 54, Avon Grove 31 >> Nine different players scored as the Cougars topped the Red Devils in Ches-Mont action. Charlotte Aldridge and Ari Smuda each scored 11 points, and Callie Ardoline chipped in eight for East.
Conestoga 46, Marple Newtown 28 >> The Pioneers prevailed in Central League action. Freshman Ryann Jennings led the way with 16 points, nine boards, five steals and three assists. Sophomore Janie Preston chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds for ’Stoga.
Great Valley 39, West Chester Rustin 35 >> Laura Lum scored 14 and the host Patriots edged the Knights. Lauren Frederick added 11 points for Great Valley. Elizabeth McGurk scored 10 points for Rustin.
Bishop Shanahan 48, West Chester East 33 >> The Eagles took control with a 17-6 second quarter, and went on to cruise past the Vikings in a Ches-Mont contest. Alyssa Brown notched a game-high 19 points for Shanahan. Annie Kerns had 15 for East, but nobody else managed more than five.

West Chester East 64, Bishop Shanahan 42 >> The Vikings raced out to a 26-9 first quarter lead and sailed to a Ches-Mont victory. K.J. Cochran led the way with 24 points, Jose Ramos added 12, and Ryan Price and Jack Kuskner each chipped in 11 for East. Roman Alexander paced the Eagles with 11 points.
Downingtown East 66, Avon Grove 64 >> Connor Shanahan poured in 27 points, and the final three came on a 3-pointer with four seconds on the clock for the win. Micah Hill added 12 points, 12 boards and six blocks for the winners. Josh Cox and Michael Britton paced the Devils with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

West Chester East 98, Coatesville 35 >> Gavin Heffernan (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Giulian Bucciarelli (200 IM, 100 freestyle) each notched individual wins to power the Vikings. Ben O’Toole registered the Raiders’ lone win in the 100 breaststroke.
Girls Swimming
West Chester 105, Coatesville 60 >> The Vikings got two wins from Grace Herlihy and topped the Red Raiders. Herlihy’s wins were in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Sarah McGann (100 freestyle), Emma Scheivert (100 breaststroke) and Hailey Persh (100 backstroke) had individuals wins for Coatesville
