Great Valley takes down Renaissance Academy

EAST WHITELAND>> The Great Valley boys basketball team was hoping to be playing in Thursday’s championship game of the Great Valley Holiday Tournament. But, a loss to Pottstown Wednesday put the host Patriots into Thursday’s consolation game against Renaissance Academy.

Great Valley used the opportunity to play their reserves most of the game as the Patriots rolled to a 49-7 win to claim third place in the holiday tournament.

Great Valley (6-4) jumped out to a 19-0 lead after one period on the young Knights team and Patriots head coach CJ Savage cleared his bench for the rest of the game.

Tyler Markowski led Great Valley with 14 points and 10 Patriots players scored points. The Knights shot just one for 35 from the field and did not make a basket until Ed Breazale drained three-ball in the fourth period.

“We really got to look at all of our young guys today,” Savage said. “And we were looking to see if they were going to execute the fundamentals and for the most part they did do that today. It was good to see them get all the playing time today.”

The Patriots took a 10-0 lead on the Knights (2-7) when Ryan McDaniel drained long three-ball. After a Knights turnover, one of eight first period miscues by the Knights, Markowski scored in the lane for a 12-0 Great Valley lead.

The Knights shot just zero for nine in the first period and you could see they were a young basketball program trying to find their footing. After a Knights miss, Will Otterbien scored on a runner for a 14-0 lead.

The lead swelled to 16-0 when Lawron Short sank two free throws and then after another Knights turnover, Otterbien drained a three-ball from the left corner and the outcome was pretty much decided as the Patriots had a 19-0 lead after just one period. Savage did not play any of his starters the rest of the game and the Patriots shot seven for 13 in the opening period.

The win gives the Patriots a 6-4 mark heading into the second half of the season Stage said his team can improve in some areas.

“We are going to have to get good play and leadership from our guards in the second half of the season,” Savage said. We lost our guards and a lot leadership from last seasoning our guys have to step up for us to be successful.

“We run a certain type off offense and a lot f teams dod not like to play us because of that style. We are going to have to play our offense and be patient and not let teams speed us up and that is going to be on our guards to play our type of basketball.”
