On eve of huge showdown with Downingtown West, Coatesville without Ortega, two assistants
With the biggest game of the year thus far this season, Coatesville may be without head coach Matt Ortega and multiple assistant coaches against Downingtown West, Friday.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Ortega and assistant coaches Steve Brazzle and Will Keylor have been away from the team this week. If, or when, they return is still unknown.
Reasoning for their absence is presently undisclosed after calls, emails and texts to Ortega, Coatesville Director of Athletics Brian Chenger and Coatesville High School Principal Michele Snyder were not returned.
Undefeated Coatesville (6-0) hosts Downingtown West (5-1), Friday at 7 p.m., for Homecoming. If Ortega is not back in his role, Damien Henry is expected to step in as temporary head coach. Ortega is also the co-defensive coordinator, so EJ Moyer would take over that position solely for the Red Raiders.
Downingtown West’s offense leads the area in scoring, averaging 40.7 points per game and the Whippets are second in total yards per game, with 360.5.
Coatesville’s defense leads the Ches-Mont League in points allowed, rushing yards and total yards allowed, giving up just eight points, 39 rush yards and 124.2 total yards per game.
The Red Raiders have won their last two matchups against West and have earned at least shares of the last six Ches-Mont National Division titles.
