Cruise control: Vikings stay unbeaten in Ches-Mont by routing Henderson
East Goshen >> The West Chester East hockey team has run roughshod on its ICSHL Ches-Mont opponents this season. That domination didn’t change Friday as a three-goal first first period helped them set sail for an 8-1 victory at Ice Line.
“We graduated a lot last year, but we also replaced a lot, so we have pretty good depth and that’s key in high school hockey,” said West Chester East coach Eric Wolf. “We have one more game to run a clean sheet through the Ches-Mont for a second season, and that doesn’t happen around here very often. We’re focused on that.”
East improved to 11-0 and its goal margin went to 89-18.
It didn’t take long for East to get rolling. After a Henderson penalty, they got on the scoreboard a little less than two minutes into the game. Danny Tirendi took a pass in the high slot and snapped a shot from about 15 feet past Henderson goalie Taylor West on the stick side for a 1-0 lead.
“That’s what I was going for,” said Tirendi. “I saw a little bit of room and I got it by him.”
“Our power play is around 40 percent. We’re pretty lethal when we’re on it, so to get one early was huge,” added Wolf.
It stayed 1-0 unti just five minutes were left in the first period. Tirendi came streaking in on the right side, cut across the net and went on his backhand to beat West and make it 2-0.
Ethan Fredricks poked home a rebound to for a 3-0 lead and put the Warriors behind the eight ball, as the Vikings took control and dictated the pace of the game.
Defenseman Michael Cardarelli upped the advantage to 4-0 nearly two minutes into the second period. Tirendi then finished off his hat trick shortly thereafter.
Fredricks and Sean Farrell collected a pair of goals apiece as the Vikings held a 56-12 shots on goal advantage.
Aiden Laverty scored in the third period to avert the shutout for Henderson.
The Warriors were not afforded many chances, but East goalies Jesse Davis (two periods) and Cameron Chandler stood up to the opportunities they had.
“Jesse and Cam have played well for us,” said Wolf. “We haven’t need our goalie to steal a game for us this season, but it’s nice to know we have two goalies who can do it if we need it.”
