Golden sticks: Presenting the 2021 All-Main Line field hockey teams

It was a banner year on the Main Line high school field hockey scene, with Episcopal Academy and Conestoga leading a strong pack of local squads.
The Pioneers (22-2) captured the Central League championship and the PIAA District 1 3A title, then advanced to the PIAA 3A state semifinals; while the Churchwomen (20-1) captured their third consecutive PAISSA tournament title and second straight Inter-Ac championship.
Other successful Main Line high school field hockey teams included Academy of Notre Dame (15-6 overall, 8-2 Inter-Ac), Merion Mercy Academy (16-6, third place in District 1 3A tournament), Radnor (14-4-1, second place in Central League), Villa Maria Academy (20-4, District 1 2A runnerup, PIAA 2A state quarterfinalists), Archbishop Carroll (15-7) and Shipley (11-5 overall, 8-1 Friends’ Schools League).
The All-Main Line high school field hockey teams are selected by the coaches. Because Main Line Media News covers 19 high schools, the Main Line Media News sports staff limits the number of sports available to first team, second team and honorable mention – but follows the priority of the coaches’ selections.
What follows are the 2021 All-Main Line high school field hockey teams:

FIRST TEAM
Saylor Milone, Academy of Notre Dame – Sophomore forward/midfielder, a first team All-Inter-Ac selection, scored 26 goals in 21 games and dished out 9 assists.
Maeve Seeger, Academy of Notre Dame – Sophomore midfielder/defender, a first team All-Inter-Ac selection, was a fine all-around player, providing scoring punch (9 goals) as well as tough defense.
Maddie Frank, Academy of Notre Dame – Senior defender and captain, a first team All-Inter-Ac selection, was a key factor in the Irish’s tough defense. Committed to Georgetown University.
Lauren DeRose, Agnes Irwin – Junior center mid, a first team All Inter-Ac selection, was a fine all-around player, contributing good offense (9 assists, 8 goals) and tough defense (3 defensive saves). Committed to University of Iowa.
Cate McConaghy, Archbishop Carroll – Junior midfielder, a first team All-Catholic League and All-Delco selection, was a fine all-around player for the Patriots, scoring 13 goals in 22 games and dished out a half-dozen assists.
Courtland Schumacher, Archbishop Carroll – Junior midfielder, a first team All-Catholic League selection, was a key factor in the Patriots’ success this fall, combining good all-around play with scoring punch (9 goals, 12 assists).
Kate Galica, Conestoga – Junior forward, an All-Central League field hockey first team pick (unanimous selection by the league coaches), scored 32 goals and dished out 14 assists as the Pioneers’ MVP. A first team all-state (Class AAA) selection, she scored both goals in Conestoga’s 2-1 win against Garnet Valley in the District 1 championship final.
Lily Wolfe, Conestoga – Senior defender and captain, a first team All-Central League selection, was the Pioneers’ defensive rock on the right side. A first team all-state (Class AAA) selection, she will attend Quinnipiac to play hockey next fall.
Shae Wozniak, Conestoga – Freshman midfielder was the second-leading scorer for the PIAA 3A state semifinalists, and was noted for her excellent distributing skills.
Ashley Sessa, Episcopal Academy – Senior forward, the Inter-Ac MVP and All-Delco Player of the Year, tallied 34 goals and 25 assists this fall, Was NFHCA 1st Team All Region and NFHCA 1st Team All America. Committed to University of North Carolina.
Macy Szukics, Episcopal Academy – Senior midfielder, a unanimous All-Inter-Ac first team selection, tallied 18 goals and dished out 9 assists. Was NFHCA 1st Team All Region and NFHCA 1st Team All America. A first team All-Delco pick, she is committed to Duke University.
Mia Garber, Episcopal Academy – Senior forward, a unanimous All-Inter-Ac first team selection, scored 28 goals and dished out nine assists. A first team All-Delco selection, she is committed to Boston College.
Gianna Cilluffo, Episcopal Academy – Senior goalie, , a unanimous All-Inter-Ac first team selection and an All-Delco first team pick, posted a .790 save percentage. Committed to Columbia University.
Emma Taylor, Haverford High – Senior center back and captain, a first team All-Central League selection, was the Fords’ Defensive MVP. Led the team in defensive saves, noted both for her ability to clear the ball, and for her fine passing skills that spurred the offense.
Maura Quaile, Haverford High – Senior forward and captain, a first team All-Central League selection, was the Fords’ Offensive MVP. Considered the linchpin to the team’s offense due to her standout stick skills, she also was extremely active defensively. Headed to St. Joseph’s University for field hockey.
Cate Voegele, Merion Mercy Academy – Senior defender and captain was among the top three candidates in the voting for the AACA’s Most Valuable Player. First team all-state (Class AA) selection provided scoring punch (13 goals, 6 assists) as well as tough defense (4 defensive saves). Committed to Villanova University to play field hockey.
Kerry McCormick, Merion Mercy Academy – Junior midfielder, an AACA all-star and second team all-state selection, was Golden Bears’ Most Valuable Player. Displayed a fine assortment of skills both offensively and defensively and was a key player on corners for the Golden Bears.
Kelly O’Connor, Merion Mercy Academy – Senior midfielder and captain, an AACA all-star and second team all-state selection, scored 14 goals and dished out 12 assists, while being a key player on corners. Committed to Georgetown University to play field hockey..
Hope Delaney, Radnor – Senior midfielder and co-captain, a first team All-Delco selection, played a huge role in the Raptors success in her transition from defense to midfield. Fourth-year starter scored 16 goals and dished out 12 assists. Will play field hockey for Princeton University.
Alex DeCain, Radnor – Freshman forward/midfielder, a first team All-Central League selection, scored 18 goals and dished out 5 assists in 19 games. Noted for her grit and toughness that helped fuel the Raptors’ aggressive play.
Riley Mazzalupi, Radnor – Senior midfielder and co-captain was a force in the midfield for the Raptors, scoring eight goals and dishing out a dozen assists. Noted for her control of the pace of play, and for her transitions from defense to attack.
Peyton Turner, Shipley – Senior center back and captain was voted the Gators’ MVP. A first team All-Friends’ Schools League selection, she was considered the backbone of the Gators’ defense and was noted for her fine field vision, passing, speed and defensive positioning.
Claudia Wein, Shipley – Senior goalie, a first team All-Friends’ League selection, was noted for her ability to work with the back line in keeping balls from entering the circle. Allowed only one goal per game, while recording numerous key saves, particularly in the Commonwealth Cup semifinal and final.
Gia Whalen, Villa Maria Academy – Junior midfielder and captain was Hurricanes’ MVP, scoring 20 goals and dishing out 7 assists. Committed to University of Iowa. A first team all-state (Class AA) selection, she was noted for her exceptional distribution skills and work ethic, and at defensive center mid she built much of Villa Maria’s attack and stabilized the Hurricanes’ defense.
Maia Dechiario, Villa Maria Academy – Senior center back was noted for her instincts, her ability to come up with the ball and her ability to read a play. Also contributed 5 goals and 8 assists, and received first team all-state (Class AA) honors. Committed to University of Connecticut.
Caroline O’Brien, Villa Maria Academy – Senior midfielder was a standout all-around player (16 goals, 15 assists) who is extremely fit, aggressive, and a hard worker who could distribute very well and eliminate with her own stick skills. Was the Hurricanes No. 1 striker on corners. A first team all-state (Class AA) selection, she has committed to Wake Forest.
