Peterson leads Bonner-Prendergast past Lansdale Catholic

LOWER GWYNEDD >> Mason Peterson weaved, ran, dashed and cut it back.

He scored on a run, a reception, and a punt return.

The Bonner-Prendergast senior running back was versatility in motion Saturday night for the Friars.

“That just gets my juices flowing and it shows other teams we’re gonna play against how versatile I am so they can’t defend against one thing,” said Peterson.

The all-around senior led the Friars to a commanding 40-6 victory over Lansdale Catholic at rainy Wissahickon, as Bonner-Prendergast lifted its record to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Philadelphia Catholic League Blue Division.

“I try to get better every week: better cuts, better cutbacks, find better ways to read things,” said Peterson, who piled up 159 yards on 22 carries, to go with his pair of receptions for 44 yards and another score. “I like the way we’re playing. We still have room for improvement. We have a big game next week against (Archbishop) Ryan so we have to get ready for next week and hit it hard.”

Bonner opened the scoring on its second possession.

Quarterback Shane Mulholland ran for 20 yards to get the Friars going, and then on the next play, Mulholland took off again, this time scoring on a 30-yard touchdown to make it 7-0 late in the first quarter.

There it stood until about three minutes remained in the first half, when the Friars blocked a punt by LC and Damir Williams-Bey recovered in the end zone to double the margin to 14-0.

Said Williams-Bey: “(Michael) Dorsey blocked the punt and I was able to see the ball going in the air and I got it. I wanted to make sure my feet were in.

“We’re getting it together. We’re getting better every week.”

Bonner got the ball back one last time with under a minute left in the first half, and that’s all the Friars needed.

Peterson took a swing pass from Mulholland and was on his way to a weaving, 34-yard touchdown to blow the game open, 21-0 Bonner at the half.

Peterson had 101 yards rushing and 44 yards receiving and a touchdown in an impressive first half.

He wasn’t done.

His 50-yard punt return for a score inflated the lead to 28-0 early in the third.

Then, Avery Hankey scored on a five-yard run for the Friars to make it 34-0 after three.

The Crusaders (0-8, 0-4 PCL Blue) got on the board in the fourth, when quarterback Cole Meehan pushed in from a yard out.

“We had some momentum building but we kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” said LC’s J.P. Bayne, one of the targets in the passing game. “We gotta be able to finish our drives – less penalties and fewer turnovers.”

Fittingly, it was Peterson who capped the scoring, with a 20-yard touchdown run in the opening moments of the fourth.
