Coatesville dominant in win over Oxford
OXFORD—The Red Raiders scored on four of its first five possessions to lead 29-0 at the end of the first quarter, and never looked back, as Coatesville (5-1 overall, 2-0 Ches-Mont) rolled past host Oxford (3-3, 2-1) by a score of 50-20 in the non-league match-up Friday night at Oxford.
“We keep talking about it each week that we want to come out and find ways to improve and get better,” said Coatesville coach Matt Ortega. “This was the first time we’ve played on grass in a while, so that was something we had to work on all week. We came out in the first half, and we were sharp. The senior leadership took control and made the plays early and put us in position to come up with another big win.”
The Red Raiders set the tone from the outset. After a long return of the opening kick-off gave Coatesville excellent field position near midfield, the Raiders mixed the run and the pass to cover the 55-yards in seven plays, capped by a 22-yard scoring strike from quarterback Harry Susi to Lebron Bessick.
Then the Raider defense went to work. Oxford’s first five possessions went fumble, interception, punt, fumble, punt. And Coatesville took full advantage, getting scores from Ashon Wesley (7-yard run); Semaj Turner (12-yard run) and another 22-yard connection from Susi to Bessick. When Michael Kennel ran one in from ten yards out late in the second, the Raiders had already put the game into Mercy Rule territory at 36-0.
“We can’t look past anyone, especially a team like Oxford that is going to play tough,” said Susi. “You see all the flags flying, you know they play with emotion, and they are the kind of team that can hurt you. I think we are getting hot at the right time. If we keep playing like we have, I think the season will go on past the Ches-Mont, but the league is always the first goal.”
Oxford finally got on the board late in the second quarter, when Luke Piskun broke loose on a 42-yard run with a little over two minutes left in the half to make it 36-6. But Coatesville answered right back. On their first play of the ensuing possession, Susi found Bessick open for a 65-yard touchdown to make it 43-6 at the break.
Coatesville rolled up 397 yards of offense, including 266 on the ground. Leading the way in rushing for the Raiders was sophomore Damon Watson, who amassed 104 yards on ten carries—all in the second half—including a touchdown, just the second of his career.”
“I’m only a sophomore, and I really don’t get to see that much playing time,” said Watson. “It’s fun to get to play, and very cool to be able to get a hundred, yards. That was only the second time I scored a touchdown on varsity.”
