Chester County Football: Week 6 preview

Week six is here and it kicks off the second half of the scholastic football season. League races are in full swing as many Ches-Mont League games dot the schedule this week. Unionville is the last undefeated team in the area and the Longhorns travel to Kottmeyer Stadium to take on an angry Downingtown East squad that fell to West Chester Rustin 20-14, last week to give the Cougars their first loss.

Here is a look at all the weekend action:

Unionville at Downingtown East
Unionville escaped an upset bid at interior last week 2019. the Longhorns used their impressive offensive line to rack up 302 yards on the ground against the Bucs. Downingtown East got a 233 yard passing night from quarterback Jamy Jenkins last week. The Cougars gave up 304 yards rushing to West Chester Rustin last week. Unionville is very good but I can’t see the Cougars dropping two in a row. Cougar running back Bo Horvath has 801 yards rushing on the season.

Downingtown East 28, Unionville 24.
Sun Valley at Bishop Shanahan
Bishop Shanahan piled up 49 points in its win over Penn Wood last week. Senior quarterback Cooper Jordan continues to impress and while Sun Valley is improved, the Eagles should prevail here. The Bishop Shanahan defense is allowing just 12.5 points per game.

Bishop Shanahan 35, Sun Valley 7.
Academy Park at Avon Grove
Academy Park is undefeated in four games and has outscored its four opponents by a combined 120-6 margin. They are big up front and can really move the football on the ground. Avon Grove got a 119 yard rushing game from Thaddeus Binstead in its 20-14 win over Great Valley last week.

Academy Park 31, Avon Grove 14.

Coatesville at Oxford
Coatesville’s defense has pitched back-to-back shutouts the past two weeks outscoring its opponents by a combined 89-0. Against West Chester Henderson last week the Red Raiders piled  up 489 yards of total offense. Oxford is improved but this is too tall  task for the host Hornets. Coatesville is averaging 33 points per game on offense.

Coatesville 35, Oxford 7.

Downingtown West at Kennett
Downingtown West has won two game sin a row after a 1-2 start to the season. The Whippets cruised over West Chester East 35-7 last week in a game they led 35-0 at halftime. The Whippets defense allowed the Vikings just 189 yards of total offense last week .Kennett sophomore running back David Lillis has rushed for 422 yards on the season.

Downingtown West 35, Kennett 21.

Penn Wood at Great Valley
Great Valley has dropped three games in a row after a 2-0 start. But, I am looking for the Patriots to bounce back and get a win over a struggling Penn Wood team that is giving up 36 points per game on defense.

Great Valley 31, Penn Wood 14.

Chester At WC Henderson
Nothing went right for West Chester Henderson in the Warriors 48-0 loss to Coatesville last week. The Warriors will face an undefeated Chester team that downed Oxford last week. The Chester defense is very good and the Warriors will have to establish some sort of running game here.

Chester 21, WC Henderson 14.

West Chester East at Chichester
The winless Vikings have a good chance to get their first win of the season here. Chichester dropped a 31-14 decision to Kennett last week in a game the eagles gave up 200 yards to the Blue Demons on the ground.  The Vikings turned the ball over three times against Downingtown West.

WC East 20, Chichester 14

Interboro at WC Rustin
West Chester Rustin is coming off an impressive 20-14 win over Downingtown East last week. Dayshawn Jacobs rushed for 190 yards against the Cougars and the Golden Knights defense allowed Downingtown East just 89 yards on the ground. interior gave up a late lead and fell to Unionville 201-9 last week. The Bucs gave up 302 yards rushing to Unionville last week.

WC Rustin 31, Unionville 14.

Conestoga at Haverford
Conestoga has taken advantage of a manageable schedule to go 4-1 on the season. The waters get a little deeper this week against Haverford but the passing combination of Calvin Shirley to Pete Detwiler is one of the better ones in the Central League. Detweiller has 15 catches for 440 yards on the season.

Conestoga 21, Haverford 17.
