Rustin, Downingtown East register big early Ches-Mont victories

In boys’ golf action, visiting West Chester Rustin topped Great Valley 198-220 in Ches-Mont on Tuesday at Chester Valley Golf Club. The Knights’ Ryan D’Ariano was medalist with a 38, and teammates Eric Miller and Sam Feeney each carded 39s. Ben Kraft and John Curran paced the Patriots with identical 42s.

Downingtown East 202, Bishop Shanahan 203, Downingtown West 205 >> In a tri-match at Downingtown Country Club, the Cougars eked out a win over the Eagles and Whippets. East’s Jake Leon birdied the final three holes to wrap up a 1-under-par 35 to lead the way. Playing in his first varsity match, Owen Wise shot a 40 after starting with a double bogie on the first hole for the Cougars (2-0). West’s Nicholas Gross and Shanahan’s Ben Saggers paced their teams with a pair of 37s.

Central Bucks West 189, Unionville 201 >> Alex Moore shot a 37 but the Longhorns fell to C.B. West in non-league action at Kennett Golf and Country Club. Other than Moore, nobody else was able to break 40 for Unionville (1-1 overall).

West Chester Henderson 213, Coatesville 247 >> Dylan Kochis registered a 2-over-par 37 at Coatesville Country Club to lead the Warriors past the host Raiders. Josh Baker chipped in a 40 for Henderson. Bryan Taylor, Frank Bradley and Michael Popplewell each had a 49 to lead Coatesville.

Oxford 226, Sun Valley 271 >> The Hornets opened the 2020 season with a Ches-Mont victory over the Vanguards at Wyncote Golf Club. Brendan Humphrey and Johnny Fields paced Oxford with scores of 40 and 41, respectively.

Devon Prep 187, Kennett 191 >> In a non-conference battle, the Tide edged the Demons at the Centennial Course at the Philadelphia Country Club (par 34). Sophomore Nick Vitale fired a 1-over 35 to lead Kennett, and Griffin Gaughan (38), Luke Mullen (39) and Drew Zieg (39) all broke 40.

West Chester East 197, Avon Grove 232 >> Kane Gallagher notched an even-par 35 at French Creek Golf Club to help power the Vikings past the Red Devils in league action. Victoria Kim and Frankie Sass also broke 40 for East. Tyler Sikorski had the low score for Avon Grove with a 42.

Girls Golf

Downingtown East 168, Unionville 188 >> The Cougars knocked off the defending state champs by 20 strokes at Whitford Country Club. Ava Sullivan and Silvana Gonzalez shared medalist honors with 39s for East (2-0 overall). Mary Dunigan paced the Longhorns (0-1) with a 41.

Girls Tennis

West Chester Henderson 7, Owen J. Roberts 0 >> The Warriors prevailed in straight sets in all seven matches in non-league action against the Wildcats. Kylie Kochis cruised 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. And the top doubles team of Kiera Koay and Kaitlyn Evans earned a 6-0, 6-1 triumph.
