Archbishop Wood’s Rahsool Diggins verbally commits to Connecticut
Connecticut men’s basketball has a fine tradition of standout point guards with a list that includes Kemba Walker, Shabazz Napier and Khalid El-Amin.
Archbishop Wood’s Rahsool Diggins is set on one day joining that elite group as the he verbally committed to UConn Sunday, the Vikings rising senior announcing his decision with a post on his Instagram account.
Diggins, the 2020 Philadelphia Catholic League Most Valuable Player, is currently ranked in the Class of 2021 as the No. 41 recruit (No. 6 at point guard) nationally by rivals.com and is ranked No. 70 (sixth position-wise) nationally by 247sports.com. He is a four-star recruit for both Rivals and 247sports.
Diggins averaged 20.2 points per game last season as Archbishop Wood went 22-5 overall and 13-1 in the PCL – finishing first in the league’s regular season – won the District 12-5A title and advanced to the PIAA-5A quarterfinals before COVID-19 cancelled the remainder of the basketball season.
As a junior, Diggins earned both All-PCL First Team and PA Sportswriters Class 5A All-State First Team honors for the second consecutive year. Diggins also reached the 1,000-point milestone in Wood’s Feb. 1 win over Archbishop Carroll and per tedsilary.com enters his senior year with 1,156 career points.
Diggins is the first verbal commit in the 2021 class for UConn head coach Dan Hurley, who has gone 35-29 in his two seasons in Storrs as Hurley looks to return the Huskies to national prominence. Connecticut has won four NCAA championships (1999, 2004, 2011 and 2014) but has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2016.
The Huskies returned to the Big East Conference in 2020 after being a member of the American Athletic Conference the previous seven seasons.
