Wissahickon gets it done in the fourth, beats Springfield-Montco
LOWER GWYNEDD >> Leah Dubin found some room, driving down the lane and through the Springfield-Montco defense.
The sophomore point guard put it up and in for two to stretch Wissahickon’s lead to 44-41 with one minute and five seconds left in a back-and-forth battle Friday night.
The Trojans had kept on grinding.
“It was a big night for us, Senior Night, and we knew we weren’t losing this game,” said Dubin. “I think we came in with the mindset that we’re gonna win, and we maybe came out too comfortable.
“In the fourth, we played with heart, we went hard and we knew what we had to do.”
Wiss trailed at the end of the first and second quarters but found its way in the second half, pushing past the Spartans 48-43 in a Suburban One League American Conference matchup at Wiss.
“We kind of had a bad start, and at halftime coach (Rodney Cline) told us that we needed to play with heart and desire, and we did that in the second half,” Dubin said.
Crunch Time
Senior Anna Schools (13 points) hit a three with three minutes to go to put the Trojans (6-10, 3-7 SOL American) up 42-41.
Marie Dryer came up with a steal for the Trojans with a minute left, leading to the drive down the lane by Dubin (12 points), making it 44-41.
The Trojans got another takeaway on the defensive end, setting up one of two free throws made by Julia Verrier to extend the margin to 45-41 with 29 seconds to go.
Rileigh Serroni tightened things up when she hit a pair of free throws for Springfield (1-15, 0-10 SOL American), cutting it to 45-43.
But Dubin calmly sank two free throws to ice it for Wiss with 17 seconds left.
“I love the seniors,” Dubin said, “and it’s good to get a win.”
