Radnor’s Ellie Mueller is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week
The 5-foot-10 senior forward became the Radnor girls’ all-time scorer Jan. 14, surpassing the record of 1,225 points held by Kelyn Freedman. As of Jan. 19, Mueller has 1,260 career points, and is averaging 17.2 ppg and 9.6 rpg this season. Last season, she averaged 17.0 ppr and 9.8 rpg, receiving first team All-Main Line and All-Central League basketball honors. She also is a standout lacrosse player, and will be playing the sport for Princeton University in 2021. Radnor girls’ basketball head coach Mark Jordan said, “Ellie has been a privilege to coach – as she is a fantastic and easy going kid off the court – but a fierce, relentless competitor on it. She and her family have always been supportive of our entire Radnor girls’ basketball program – and they all will be missed greatly. She will leave a legacy on the basketball court, the lacrosse field and her classrooms that will be remembered for a long time.”
Q: What was your first reaction when you realized you broke the all-time scoring record?
A: I was initially a bit confused! I was glad to have my family and friends there supporting the team. The moment was also really cool because it got me in touch with a lot of old friends, teachers, coaches and teammates that I haven’t spoken to in a while. Coach Jordan really knows how to make celebrations special, and I feel so lucky to have been a part of his program throughout the years. Radnor girls basketball has a unique family culture, and all of the alumni and families reaching out is a testament to what Jordan has built at Radnor.
Q: What does it mean to you to hold the Radnor girls basketball all-time scoring record?
A: I’m excited to hold the record because it will keep me connected to the school and the program in a way I did not anticipate. I look forward to the year when another player breaks the record and I get to come back to watch it!
Q: Have you heard from Kelyn Freedman?
A: Yes, Kelyn texted me! I was so shocked. She is a total legend at Radnor, not only in basketball but also in lacrosse (Coach Jordan only refers to her as “Blessed Kelyn”). She said she will try to make it out to a game so hopefully I’ll get to meet her.
Q: Tell us a little about your start in basketball – what first sparked your interest in competitive basketball? Did you begin playing basketball before you took up lacrosse?
A: I have been playing basketball for as long as I can remember. My dad used to play, so my brothers and I took an interest immediately. I began playing lacrosse much later. I think my parents first bought me a stick in middle school. I’m beyond excited to play for legendary Coach Chris Sailer and attend a school that focuses on academics.
Q: Who is your favorite basketball player and why?
A: My favorite basketball player is Radnor coach Mark Jordan. He makes me feel better about my mid-range shot when he plays in practice.
Q: Tell us a little about your pre-game preparation the day of a game.
A: Before games, I make sure to get lunch on my way home. After I eat, I take a 10 minute nap. Then, I get more food on the way back to school (Jimmy John’s Italian hoagie, Honeygrow or Wawa) to eat on the bus or while watching the JV game.
Q: What is your favorite course at Radnor?
A: My favorite course that I am currently taking is called Medical Careers. It is a program offered by Radnor High School that allows me to spend five afternoons a week at Lankenau Medical Center, where I take a science course and shadow physicians. I’m interested in going into medicine, but I haven’t decided on a college major yet.
