Wissahickon stays hot in win over Upper Dublin

LOWER GWYNEDD >> Wissahickon won its third straight game Friday evening with a 44-35 Suburban One League American Conference victory over Upper Dublin at Wissahickon High School.

“Tuesday night’s (triple overtime win over Abington) gave us a little boost in our season,” Wiss point guard Harrison Williams said. “We struggled for a long time. Getting a good win against Abington upped our confidence and allowed us to play a good one tonight.”

The Trojans (6-8, 4-2 SOL American) got out to a fast start, winning the first quarter 15-11, and never looked back. They capitalized on 10 Upper Dublin turnovers in the first half to head to halftime with a 25-16 advantage.

Anytime the Cardinals (5-5, 1-4 SOL American) got the game within two possessions in the second half, Wiss had an answer. Andrew Buck hit two three-pointers in the third for the Trojans and Matt Compas and Jackson Intrieri each hit one to keep the hosts comfortably ahead, 39-28, heading to the fourth.

“Our guards played well,” Williams said. “Matt Compas had a good game and Andrew Buck really came and picked us up tonight, having a 12-point game. He brought a lot of energy and I think that was the difference in tonight’s game.”

In the fourth, Wissahickon’s defense forced four more turnovers – totalling 14 in the game – and did enough offensively to cruise to a 44-35 win.

The Trojans also got some energy from a packed house. Wissahickon celebrated their ‘Silent Night,’ where the student body dresses in Halloween costumes and remains seated and quiet before erupting with cheers when the team reaches eight points.

“It adds a little excitement,” Williams said. “It makes the crowd a little more into the game and keeps our energy up-beat throughout the entire time, doesn’t allow us to have a dull moment.”

Compas led Wiss with 15 points and Buck added 12.

Upper Dublin’s Drew Stover scored a game-high 15 points and was the only Cardinal in double figures.
